Weapons Training(Magpul Dynamics)

Postby chi804 » Tue, 09 Mar 2010 19:37:20

So, I've been looking to take some classes to learn some tactical and fundamental skills with my handgun and carbine. I really couldn't find a lot in VA and the places I did find didn't strike my interests at all. Is anyone familiar with Magpul Dynamics?

http://www.magpuldynamics.com/training/ ... tion.shtml

This is what I'm looking for? Blackwater is a little too far and expensive. The Magpul classes are reasonably priced but they're not offering any dates for VA or anywhere near VA.

Anyone out there know of any schools that are teaching classes in VA that are comparable to Magpul Dynamics?

Thanks.

Not in Va, but fairly close. A friend of mine and I are seriously considering this class.

Ranges can host Magpul Dynamics training courses as long as they meet criteria and have 18 students. Maybe something can be worked out locally.... hmmmm...

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I'm unfamiliar with all of the training institutions in VA so I guess I'll have to start inquiring as to what they have to offer. What I do like about the Magpul classes that even the beginner course is taught with a "combat mindset". I understand that a lot of the wording maybe targeted marketing wordplay but it's definitely worked for me.
All of the men in my family, on both my father's and mother's side, have served in the military and unfortunately I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 4.5. I always wanted to serve and have always known that that dream was never going to be realized. So, in the spirit of this thread, I've always wanted to have military style training with weapons systems and tactics. Due to the Mid East conflicts, it seems as if a lot of these schools have opened up. I especially like the 'shooting on the move' course that is included in the Magpul beginner course.

Anyone else got any thoughts or ideas?

Silver Eagle Group in Ashburn, VA just developed a new course, Defensive Pistol I. I think this might be in line with what you are looking for, but its only a one day course. The next course is on September 9th. Course description: http://www.silvereaglegroup.com/training-and-competitions/handgun-training/defensive-pistol-i

How is your marksmanship? Can you accurately engage a realistic threat quickly enough to survive a lethal encounter? Are you ready to defend your life? If you cannot answer these questions affirmatively and confidently then Defensive Pistol I is a course you should seriously consider.

Developed at Silver eagle Group by law Enforcement and Military Veterans, Defensive Pistol I is instruction designed to take you to the next level. This course is not for beginners. The target audience is anyone that has a legitimate need for serious defensive pistol skills. If you are a civilian, a background check will be required to certify good moral character. If you are law enforcement or military, you can benefit from the focus on survivability versus the usual focus on liability.

Course content will include the justification of deadly force (in detail), safety considerations, and equipment selection. The main area of instruction will focus on combat marksmanship. The fundamentals will be presented and practiced in fine detail. The Fighting Stance, Grip, Draw, Sight Alignment, Sight Picture, Trigger Control and Follow Through will be covered in depth.

Instructor to student ratio will be low providing individual attention to the correct fundamentals. This is a demanding eight hour period of instruction. Students should be in good physical condition (able to stand for at least six hours, able to fire at least 450 rounds of ammunition). We know and understand that injuries plague everyone, and we are willing to accommodate persons with disabilities.

Class size is limited to a maximum of ten students. make your plans to take your skills to the next level now. Be ready.
Topics Covered:

Justification of deadly force (in detail), safety considerations, equipment selection

Combat marksmanship, fighting stance, grip, draw, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control and follow through

Round Count: 450

Additional Materials:

* reliable semi-automatic pistol 9mm or greater caliber
* at least three high capacity magazines or five single stage magazines
* sturdy belt capable of supporting pistol and at least two magazine pouches
* strong side holster (outside the waistband)
* two magazine pouches
* ball cap with brim
* eye protection
* ear protection
* shirt with sleeves (no v-neck or loose neck shirts)
* pants with cargo pockets (allowing comfortable movement)
* comfortable active footwear (boots or sneakers are best-- absolutely no open-toed shoes)
* at least 450 rounds of reliable ammunition
* lunch and water

Civilians:

*
o Concealed Carry Permit or

*
o Letter of Good Moral character from jurisdiction of residence

Course Length: approximately 9 hours of instruction (approx. 2.5 hours classroom)

Range Time: approx. 5.5 hours

Course Price: $295.00

Everyone will receive a certificate of completion.

There will be a written test and shooting qualification to receive the passing certificate, needed to proceed to the next level.

Let me know if I you have any questions

Also Dominion Shooting Range does a defensive pistol course every monday. I haven't asked but I have seen some videos and it looks like shooting on the move and from behind cover.

They are very good, but nothing takes the place of real world training. JMHO

Videos should be reinforcing actual training. If you just watch a video and even practice it, no one is there to check your form.

I will recommend Pat Goodale Practical Firearms Training. I have taken several of his courses and while its not in Virginia its just off of 64 in West Virginia.

www.pgpft. com

I have also watched most of the Magpul videos and they are a good reference but they are nothing like what you get in a real class.
