Click here for details -> why does VCDL need my help? Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
15 posts • Page 1 of 1
Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleI was wondering the legality of transporting my shotgun to the range in one of those hard plastic cases used on ATV's mounted to my motorcycle. Assuming that the case has a lock on it, the gun is unloaded and the ammunition is in my saddle bag. It seems that the set-up should follow all laws that the gun is not accessible by me while driving and that ammunition is in a separate compartment. I really hate driving my truck to the range on a beautiful day when I can fit all my gear in my saddlebags, so long as I can find a way to mount a hard lockable case to my motorcycle. Any comments?
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleI wonder if you could mount a hard shell rifle case for an ATV to your bike?. It seems doable. Check Cabelas, Bass Pro or Gander Mountain.
And as long as it's unloaded, I doubt that Johnny Law will give you any grief. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” — Edmund Burke
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
Ya, I don't think it would be an issue. If anyone made an OC handgun holster for the motorcycle I'd have to buy one, but I've never seen anything like that...yet.
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
They make handgun holster mounts for the ATV market that attach to the handlebars. That should be open enough. ![]() “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” — Edmund Burke
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleI know a guy who was going dove hunting back in the late '70's that strapped his marlin 36" shotgun to the handlebars of his Harley. It took him more than an hour to get the Chesterfield Po Po to believe he was going hunting. If I remember correctly it was 6 or 8 cars of Po Po that showed up after he was stopped.

The 36" barrel didn't give it away?

Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
It would be too easy to make one, use a Blackhawk Serpa and remove the screws that hold the holster to the MOLLE adapter, Paddle plate or belt adapter. bolt a plate on the bike where you want the holster, drill a few holes in the plate and screw it on "Viola, motorcycle holster," ![]() Of course it is in the last place you looked, your not going to keep looking for something after you've found it.

Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleWait, so is it legal to open carry a pistol on your bike like those pics in VA?
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleYes, open carry laws should apply. One would not need a ccp for a exposed weapon on a motorcycle the same as if it was on your belt and not coverd up.

Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
Although I bet you get stops a lot! I ride an F800ST so those holsters don't quite fit my bike, but perhaps I need to work something out. I could probably fabricate something to mount one of those cheap Blackhawk plastic holsters you find at Gander Mountain. IMHO a retention holster is a must.
Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleAnybody want to borrow my Saiga 12 with the 10-shot mag to strap on their back and try this out in downtown Arlington? Wait........... I might need my shotgun before you get the paperwork all done. I withdraw that offer.

Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycleOne of those "discrete" rifle bags that are long enough for your shotgun, with backpack straps, would do the trick.

Re: Transporting Shotgun.. on a motorcycle
This should be a good offer if you haven't withdrawn it. Would like to borrow it.
