Purchasing Shotgun FFL Requirments

Postby skeeterss0 » Sun, 26 Jun 2011 08:46:56

I'm curious as to what is required when purchasing a shotgun from a FFL. From a post on the main board someone complained about when they purchased a shotgun from Dicks. I was under the assumption no tracking of longrifles were made, only handguns.

No weapons are "tracked" in VA except NFA items...you still have to pony up 2 IDs with the same address for handguns and long guns...most muzzle loaders dont require anything...unless they have interchangeable barrels...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

If all you have to do is show 2 IDs what is this thread talking about?

Dicks sporting goods had an error caught on a purchase form by the ATF and they are trying to get the guy to come back in and correct the error...and yes you only need to show 2 IDs with the same address plus meet the basic qualifications to legally possess the firearm you are trying to buy...pretty simple...

Btw, although weapons arent "tracked" the federal forms are required to be maintained in perpetuity by the FFL holder...that goes for any state...

In addition to the 4473, we here in Virginia also have to fill out the SP-65 form, in duplicate, the carbon of which is supposed to be sent to the state police for ... something. While it doesn't have your address on it it does have other info about you, and the category of firearm(s) you acquired.

So we do have some registration here in Virginia. The feds only get specifics when they get the 4473s from dealers, either by request or when the dealer goes out of business, or if there's a multiple handgun purchase happening. (Do be aware that when dealers go out of business, they have to turn over all their 4473s and bound books to the ATF, who then optically scans them into electronic versions. That's not tinfoil hattery, there has been at least one piece on it in the mainstream media [by an anti-gun reporter for an anti-gun newspaper, interestingly enough] with ATF on record about doing it.)
