New to me anyways. I've been on the prowl for awhile now, looking for a good .22 rifle. I let a few 10/22's and Savage's slip through my fingers. But then yesterday, I saw it. A Marlin 60 sitting in the Pawn Shop. It called to me. I called back. $115. I went home and told the wife. She said yes. And today, it became mine.



It came with these scope mounts. That thrilled with them.



Since I have no scope to mount right now, they had to go. Blocking the irons and what not.



So I went out to the range to test it. Let me get my excuses out now. I haven't been shooting in awhile, I need more practice, new gun, and I was hungry. I think that covers it.






All shot at 50m. Not bad, but obviously room for improvement. Worryingly, while I was shooting two screws started to back off which let the receiver move around a little. I thumb tightened them down, and everything was fine. Will a little loctite fix this?

I have one that my wife bought me for christmas back in '78. Like every other Marlin rimfire they are well built and super accurate.

I've had mine since '84 and its a tackdriver with factory sights.

I have two, one a Marlin with a 4X scope on it (My mom and Dad have it for garden defense work) and the one I wanted for years, a Glenfield with the squirrels and nuts checkering. They are a ton of fun, not too expensive to feed and once you find the ammo they like (mine do real well with Remington Yellow Jackets on the groundhogs and Thunderbolts on paper), the accuracy tightens up and there are virtually no malfuctions.

Grumpy, it ate all the Federal I fed it yesterday without a single problem. And Federal is the cheapest stuff at Wally World. I think I'm going to like this gun!

I have one that I got year's ago and I am even allowed to shoot it now and then as the wife like's it enough to shoot it all the time. It sit's by my back door for critter control.

What are some scopes I should look at? I don't want to spend a whole lot. I've heard BSA and Tasco are alright for the money.

I picked up a 795, and as I understand it that's basically the same action as a 60, except detachable box mag instead of tube.

The break-in is getting up on 300 rounds and it's just now starting to "smooth out". For awhle there it choked and gagged on jsut about every type of ammo i fed it, but now it's seeming to like teh 40 grain high velocity stuff, at least for preventing stove pipe FTEs... I still can't hit anything with it past 25 yards, but I blame that on these ol' eyes

You may have seen my post about my new ruger 10/22, I picked it up only cause my girl high jacked my marlin 60. Great rifles right out of the box. She and I took both rifles out monday and both shot accurate and with zero issues. Nice purchase, if i can see your serial number correct looks like it was manufactured in 2005

I want one of those! I shot one a lot last year, and ended up buying a Winchester 190 instead, but haven't been as pleased with it. It works ok, but not as accurate as the Model 60. (Could be that I'm not shooting as often, too.) I hope you enjoy it!

As for scopes its all what you want to spend. For under 50 bucks you can pick up a decent tasco rimfire or similar. Mine had a 3x9x32 tasco on it which was pretty clear and good size for that gun. I happened to replace because i had an extra scope lying around. My 10/22 has a nikon buckmaster which I couldnt see putting a $300+ scope on a gun that cost $100-150. The mueller optics apv is a pretty popular rimfire scope which will cost you about $130. Lots of good reviews for that. Simmons is also a good "budget" scope to consider.

I love my Marlin 60. I was looking for a .22LR for my daughter a year or so ago when we were planning to attend an Appleseed shoot (ended up not going, though). A gun shop in Manassas had several Mossberg 702Bs for sale, so I went to get us one. I guess they hadn't updated their Web site for a few ... milennia because they had none. They did have a used Marlin 60 with synthetic stock, case, and red/green fiber optic sights for $150. First time we used it was a gathering of friends and families. My 9-year-old daughter was having trouble hitting the 20-oz. soda bottles at 50 yards on top of the two refigerator backstops and asked, "Is this thing sighted in"? I took the rifle and popped each of the five or six bottles off the top of the fridge each with one shot. I handed it back to her and said, "Yep, it's sighted in just fine."

I didn't have access to my own guns for most of the time that I lived in Tampa (mine were back in VA), but I often rented a Model 60 at the range. Super-accurate and good, cheap fun to shoot! I wish I had one of my own. My Winchester 190 fills the gap for now, but it's not as nice as the Marlin (much heavier trigger pull and not as accurate -- or it could be that I was shooting 2-3 times a week in Tampa and 1-2 times a month here!).

I’ve got a Marlin 60 I’ve had for a coon’s age. Think I bought it at a K-mart. It’s got the squirrel and acorn pressed onto the stock if I remember correctly. Like every Marlin I ever watched come out of the box, this one was a tackdriver right out of the box. It’s got some cheap scope on it that also came from K-Mart. Those little guns are truly classics. Sort of like the Remington Nylon 66 (or the brown-stocked Mohawk) and the Browning 10-22. I’ve got a 10-22 and a Mohawk. Always wanted one of those Nylon 66 models with the chrome barrel and the black and white stock, but they quit making them before I got around to buying one. A while back, the Ruffed Grouse Society gave away a Browning Semi-Auto .22 in a drawing. I’d forgotten all about them. That’s the semi-auto Browning’s been making since Mr. John Moses was doing the test-firing. Beautiful little rifle. Reckon I’ll have to have one of them, too. They’re purty enough to give to a girl baby. They’re going for somewhere between $700 and $1,200 depending upon grade now. Just be a shame not to have one.
But I wouldn’t take a brand-new anything for that little Model 60.

I bought a Marlin 60 today. The guy said the it was in fairly good shape. They had 2 for sale, I think I bought the newer one, which to me was simpler. the bolt pushes in to stay open. The other one had a scope, but it stopped @ 1/2 open when it was empty. I didn't get that one because I thought that the less mechanisms the better. KISS is what I went with today. A gunsmith I am not. I paid $69.00 for it. It has some dings, maybe a scope mounted once, but I bought it to shoot. Can anyone tell me how to tell if I got a good deal? Maybe when it was manufactured? serial #1852xxx Thanks!

@ $69.00 the price sounds great, the proof is in how it shoots. Scratches and dings don't matter at that price, but if she shoots straight and most model 60s, do yours will last a lifetime...
