AR-15 vs Mini 14

Postby Riposite » Wed, 21 Sep 2011 19:42:44

Hi all,

in a month or two getting a real rifle will be happening for me, and I am curious what would be reccomended a mini-14 or a AR-15? Heard the ARs are nicer but the Mini-14s more rugged. Also any reason to get an AR-15 outside of 5.56/.223 like in 6.8 or 9 mm?

Thanks

I'm interested in both also. One gun dealer prefers the Mini-14 in 6.6 SPC so he can use it for deer hunting. He also suggested the Mini-30 (in 7.62 x 39, I think).
I need to find someone with both and an area to shoot them before I decide.

Never initiate force against another. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.KYFHO

Personal experience tells me the mini 14. However, I have been shooting for years and alot of different platforms. If you're new to rifles, probably start with an AR15 for the light weight low recoil. A mini is a little heavier and has a little more recoil. Both are excellent choices so get both and don't look back! :pistol:

If you get the Mini, use either Ruger factory mags or new Promag steel mags. I love the 6.8, would love to get it in the Mini-14 but Ruger uses SAAMi spec chambers and twist rates. I have two 6.8 SPC ARs and love them.

I have a new Mini 14 and just love it. It works very well and will take anything you feed it. I bought it because it was more socially acceptable.
