Anyone who hasn't yet been to an Appleseed shoot - I heartily recommend it. I went to one up here in NH a couple of weeks ago, and it was a great time. I learned a lot, too.

do you need a certain caliber of rifle or will a .22 work?

A .22 is probably the best caliber you can use when you are starting to learn rifle marksmanship.

It might be easier for you to learn if the rifle is:
1. a semi-automatic
2. has a 1&1/4" sling (a GI type web sling is easy to learn to use) on it
3. you have 3 or 4 magazines for it (some stages of fire require a magazine change while some do not but all reguire 10 rounds to complete a stage on the AQT - a lot of the firing will only be 5 rounds, such as when using the 1" squares)
4. I've seen folks shoot rifleman scores with a bolt action .22 but they are folks with lots of practice handling and firing their rifles
