My computer glasses are increasingly inadequate to the task. I've found that hit-and-miss selection of optometrists who can do shooting prescriptions isn't the way to go. ((So far, I've gotten, "just tilt your head back with your progressive bifocals" and "just get your lenses tinted yellow; you don't need a special prescription for shooting.") I'm sure I'm not alone in appreciating recommendations from those of you who have had success with your optometrists.

Seems like I have heard of some shooters having their bifocals made with the reader lens at the top of the glasses. You may want to try that.

I had a set made without the bifocals. That has always worked best for me.

The optometrist at http://advanced-eye.com/index.html near Mt Vernon hospital is a shooter. I use progressives; he made me a pair with no close prescription...just the distance and middle corrections. Yellow. Works nice. Don't have to tilt my head back to focus on the front sight.

Thanks-will head down there. A couple of days ago I was referred to a local Springfield optometrist. I took advantage of the web-based contact form and asked specifically (1) do they have experience in this (2) if so, can I bring in a fake gun (like a plastic training pistol) to get the distance right. First part of the response was an evasive non-answer (we will work with you). The second part, and turn-off, was that they "don't allow guns in the shop."

I think I will try that middle and distance idea out on my glasses too... Trifocals suck to use but I practic with them due to the fact that they are what I wear most times and want to be familiar with their characteristics,, Tried drug store cheaters with a little sucess,,,Always have to give one thing up to gain another....Eye exam coming up soon ,,

I hope robotic eyes with all kinds of enhancements become availble during my lifetime. It would be awesome to have IR/UV modes! Hey...if TSA can have their body scanners and it's not an invasion of privacy, I need to get those built into my new eyes...concealed anything, I think not! Perhaps milimeter rader while I'm at it?

I don't remember where I got this idea, but it has worked for me. I got a pair of reading glasses at WalMart. Before I went to WM, I marked a dowel with a mark for my thumb and one where the front sight would be with my arm extended. I tried different glasses until I found a pair where the sight mark was in focus at shooting distance. Cost was $9 and I have been using them for 2 years. If I need to do fine work (adjust a sight, etc) I switch to my regular glasses. YMMV
