Thinking about going to several more gun show before I move, maybe 1-2 more. I was wondering/searching (cant search much on a mobile device...lol) about buying and trading at Va gun shows.

Do you have to have a Va drivers license and voters card/CWP/any document with your address. Or can I have a tx DL and supporting IDs and buy and trade at va gun shows?

If you are not a Virginia resident, any firearms you purchase will have to be shipped by the dealer to a FFL in your home state.

Since private sales are only allowed between two Virginia residents, you're out of luck there as well.

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is you need whatever ID/paperwork that you would need to buy a gun any other day in Virginia. If you have a Texas DL, you cannot take possession of any handguns and you can only buy long guns through an FFL. You can buy a handgun, and have it shipped to a Texas FFL.

Additional info, if you are military with PCS orders to Virginia, that will qualify you as a Virginia resident for the purpose of buying guns.

I'm not military, but my wife is. Shoot. That's what I was thinking. Thanks for all the replies!

Does the same go for pawn shops? Like if I have a shotgun or rifle I wanted to trade in for a hand gun, still need to be a Va resident to take possession, other wise I have to have it shipped to a FFL in tx?

Sounds like you need to use the same approach as my two grown sons whenever they need a gun they can't afford: "Gee, Dad; you really ought to get one of THEM!"

Occurs to me a spouse ought to have a little more traction with his spouse than a son has with his pappy.

As to the pawnshop question, my instinct would be that the same law on purchase and sale of guns applies to all buyers and sellers. So the pawn shop operator is either an individual or a FFL and regulated as such. Talk reeeal purty to your wife. :roll:

Thanks for the reply dormin! I kind of figured as much.

Lol, ask the wife...she says if i want another one, i need to figure out how to pay for it. she wants nothing to do with the purchase/trade of guns. lol she does however like to look at them and shoot them! :hysterical:

Pawn shops are FFL holders and are subject to the same regulations regarding residency.

You're a resident if you have the intention of making a home in this state: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicen ... -residency

That suffices for private sales, if you want to buy from a dealer you've got to sort out the ID issue. Most don't want to go to the hassle of dealing with anything but driver's licenses, but other forms of government-issued ID can be used in combination to meet federal requirements.
