Yeah, didn't see that one coming. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading Republican lawmaker would not rule out tax increases on Thursday if they fostered economic growth, adding that "everything is on the table" for a U.S. congressional panel charged with forging a deal to cut the deficit.
Representative Dave Camp, head of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee in the House of Representatives, told Reuters in a telephone interview that the deepening global financial crisis would prompt him and other "super committee" members to pull together.
On Wednesday following his appointment to the panel, Republican Senator Patrick Toomey, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, told reporters that the tax code has "indefensible" special-interest tax breaks that could be considered. The senator said he was not interested in any large tax increases, which he said could hurt the economy. Toomey noted that he voted to end the ethanol tax subsidy.

How does a tax "foster economic growth?" Economic ignorance I think.

It's obvious that revenues have to be looked at in addition to spending cuts. But instead of just raising taxes we need wholesale tax reform. Eliminate loopholes and fraud and create a fairer system in general.

Gotta disagree with you. I know what my annual salary is, therefore I know what I can and cannot afford. If I do not have the money for something that I want, I do not buy it. Period! Notice that I used the word WANT vs. NEED. This is the root of the problem at the federal level. They WANT to spend money on all kinds of things. The Constitution is very clear on the things that money NEEDS to be spent on. This country cannot continue to fund all of the BS agencies that have been created. Nor can we continue to send money to other countries (especially those like Somalia that would be happy to see us collapse!). It's called budgeting 101!

OK, but what does that have to do with anything I said? I didn't say anything about whether or not you are capable of simple budgeting. Unless you make a living preparing tax returns, I don't see how you could be against a simplified and fair tax code that increases efficiency and reduces tax dodging. Never once did I suggest we "raise" taxes, but we can certainly save a whole lot of money if we simplify the system.

Has nothing to do with economics. Paying more taxes is all about love of country and patriotism. Taxes are at an all time low too. And, the rich must pay their fair share. If every working person in the US gives and extra 25% of their earnings we could solve all of our economic, deficit, and debt problems in a couple of months. Things would then be wonderful. Our wonderful president would then lower taxes even lower than they are now and all would be right with the world. Then congress would do away with presidential term limits and President Obama could rule forever. *sigh*

In this post you at least inferred that raising taxes was part of the solution. I do agree that a simplified tax structure (like the flat tax system that has been talked about for several years) would be a HUGE improvement! This would save money for the gov't and you and I as well. My apologies to you if I misunderstood your post.
