Obituary of a Country

Obituary of a Country

Postby Yarddawg » Tue, 14 Jun 2011 09:38:40

I received this in an email and thought that I would pass along. I will not debate the validity of the statistics provided concerning the last presidential election. To me, it doesn't really matter. I am looking at the bigger message.

Obituary of a Country

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinborough, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
. from spiritual faith to great courage;
. from courage to liberty;
. from liberty to abundance;
. from abundance to complacency;
. from complacency to apathy;
. from apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."

The Obituary: Born 1776, Died 2008
(It doesn't hurt to read this several times.)

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the last Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29
Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 McCain: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million McCain: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1

"In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase. (a conservative estimate)

And if Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals - and they vote - then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

If you are in favor of this direction, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize how apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

This is truly scary! Of course we are not a democracy, we are a Constitutional Republic. Someone should point this out to Obama. Of course as we know, he and too many others pay little attention to The Constitution. There couldn't be more at stake than on Nov 2012.

If you are concerned, you may want to pass this along.

Died: 1861.

Cause: murder most foul.

Also, "Alexander Tyler" (alternately "Tytler") has been frequently cited for that reference, though I have not found 100% conclusive evidence of it in my research.

But, the message is the same.
The quiet war has begun, with silent weapons
And the newest slavery is to keep the people poor, and stupid.
Novus Ordo Seclorum

I've read this elsewhere either all or in part. Travis is correct about whether this can be attributed partly or entirely to Tytler. Does it matter?

When I first read "A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury."

My jaw dropped because the simple truth of this statement is blatant. The rest of the piece isn't far of the mark either.

Too many topics are sidetracked by non-issues. It doesn't matter to me if Tytler wrote this or Shakespeare (okay, maybe a bit because I never did "get" Shakespeare.)

Drop the debate on authorship (as well as other tangents like - "well, we are not actually a democracy") and we are faced with the question: is this what is essentially happening in our country today?

I, for one, would be hard-pressed to say no.

Andy
P.S. For what it's worth, from what I've read of Tytler, if he did not write this, he may well have agreed with it.
