A Place To Shoot Outdoors In Northern VA

Postby N0VA » Tue, 13 Dec 2011 03:34:54

I know there are outdoor shooting ranges in the area, but I'd love to have a place to go squirrel hunting or just plinking. From the Reston / Herndon area, I'd be willing to drive a couple hours to get to some place I could call my own. A place perfecty legal and safe place to shoot without anyone else intruding or being near any residential areas...

But I aint rich and even if I had the money, how often would I get out there to justify paying thousands per acre?

Its just an idea I'm batting around, but has anyone out there ever thought about getting a group of people together and they all chip in on a piece of land? Couldn't some deal be worked out like is done with timeshares? Maybe if 36 people got together they'd each get ten days to use the land. Oh I know there would be all sorts of details to work out, like land management and maintenance, taxes, etc. I was just wondering if this is a practical idea and has anyone ever tried it?

Another idea I had is that the land could be used for camping and if it were near water maybe fishing too.

I know some folks will advise to join a hunting club and I think eventually I might. Getting kind of old for hunting though, and never really started, so I figured I would start out small, shoot a few squirrel, learn how to skin 'em and cook 'em (the wife won't eat them , but my son might)

Really just want a place to shoot cans and other small targets without havng to go to a range.

Well, on another forum someone mentioned leasing land and after I did a little more searching on the web I came up with this:
http://www.hightechredneck.com/freesearchresults.asp

So I guess this is what most folks do - they just join a club - still not exactly what I had in mind but maybe its the only practical choice

years ago I joined up with nsa-inc.com for access to hunting and ranges. It was a reasonable deal at the time. Don't know what their pricing is these days, but worht looking into.

Looks like they charge $500.00 per year. Based on your experience would you say that is reasonable? Supposing all I wanted to do was take a few rifles out in the woods, find a good hill or berm out in the middle of nowhere and just do some plinking or squirrel hunting?

What's it really like to be in a hunt club? I have no problem being in a group of like - minded folks, but I'd be just as happy on my own. I have never really hunted before and I know these clubs can teach you how to hunt. I'd like to learn...its just that what I'm really after is a place to go to shoot guns - target practice but not on a range with other folks.

Oh well, reckon I'll just save up some cash for a few months and see about joining NSA, gotta keep it real and stop wishing for things I cannot afford. Hope nobody minds me being human and admitting I'm a little jealous of some of you folks got all that land out there.

They have established ranges on some properties, I'd believe that plinking at random would not be acceptable to them. I can't remember all the rules, but I think there was something about other than hunting, all firearms discharge will be on established ranges.

Then you need to buy/lease your own property if you don't want to be around other people.
