Hi Everybody, Brand new to the 2nd Amendment scene, for all practical purposes. My dad taught me shooting basics (rifle, pistol, and shotgun) back when I was in my early teens--informal lessons in the woods and a few trips to the range. He was never much of a firearm enthusiast (unlike his father), but did want to teach me basic gun handling skills. I definitely appreciate that he did that for me. Anyway, I hadn't touched a gun since I was maybe 14 until last year--a good 15 years later--when I had the opportunity to go on a charity skeet shooting trip with some coworkers. I had a blast with that (both literally and figuratively), and am pretty sure it's what sparked my interest in firearms for as a hobby and, more recently, for protection. I picked up a used Glock 19 in great condition this weekend, and am signed up with the girlfriend for a basic handgun safety course in Richmond next weekend--I figure after all these years I could definitely use a refresher, and certainly want her to be able to safely handle it now that we have a gun in the house. Also, I'll be able to use the certificate from that to apply for my CHP. That's pretty much it. I look forward to meeting fellow board members both online, and in person at the range.

Incidentally, any recommendations from people in/around the area for their favorite shops and ranges? In terms of shops, the only one I know of in town is Woodbrook Sports (which is where I got my Glock), and the closest range looks to be the Rivanna Rifle & Pistol Club.
Obviously, closer is nice, but I'm not opposed to venturing out a little further when it comes to quality, selection, staff, etc. All advice, tips, etc. is appreciated.

Welcome to the site!! I would suggest you consider a shotgun for your second purchase, instead of getting another pistol. You said you had a blast killing those vicious clay pigeons. I'd also suggest that it be a 20 gauge, so both you and your girlfriend can enjoy putting lot of rounds out of it. It is a little tougher than with a 12 gauge, but the recoil is a lot easier on the shoulder.
Of course it is in the last place you looked, your not going to keep looking for something after you've found it.

Awesome offer, Bill--thanks very much. I might just have to take you up on your offer if I end up down your way.
And thanks, Greg, for the recommendation on the shotgun. I'll be applying for my CHP after I finish my gun safety class this weekend, which is why I'd been considering a subcompact pistol for my next purchase.
The thought of being able to hone my skeet shooting skills, though, is a definite temptation... The fundraiser was held at the Shenandale Gun Club, which was absolutely amazing, but I hear it's difficult to get a membership there. Maybe I should try to get on the waiting list now...

I personally don't like subcompacts, it's more an issue I have then with the gun. I CC a 4" xd with no problems.
