Senator Webb's response

Postby Vorkosigan » Wed, 29 Jul 2009 15:00:50

I had gotten a pro-forma response when I initally sent in my thanks, however I just recieved this one as well:

-------------

Dear Mr. XXXX:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the Thune amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 National Defense Authorization Act. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me.

As you may be aware, the Thune amendment would have allowed individuals to carry concealed firearms across state lines, provided they are entitled to do so in their state of residence and that the state they are traveling to allows for concealed carry. The amendment included protections that would have prevented those who engage in criminal activity (such as gang members) from taking advantage of this legislation. The amendment also required individuals to abide by the concealed carry laws of any state in which they are present.

I voted in favor of the Thune amendment, which ultimately was not adopted by the Senate. My support for this amendment was predicated on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and I will continue to examine all congressional legislation governing gun rights to ensure that public safety is protected while also safeguarding the constitutional rights of citizens.

The issue of gun usage in America understandably divides people, usually along the lines of those who believe any relaxation of gun laws will benefit criminal and violent activity, versus those who believe that gun laws need to be modified in order to allow law-abiding people to defend themselves. I have a great deal of empathy for those who have been the victims of gun violence, and I have worked with citizens groups as well as our governor in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shootings to focus our approach. As the U.S. Senate debates matters pertaining to the Second Amendment, please be assured that your specific views will be helpful to me and my staff. I hope you continue to share your thoughts with us in the years ahead.

I also invite you to visit my website at www.webb.senate.gov for regular updates on issues that are important to Virginia and our nation.

Thank you once again for contacting my office.

Sincerely,

Jim Webb
United States Senator

It never ceases to amaze me how they can seem to be on both sides of a argument ,Their speech writers are experts at it though,,, He and Webb still make me very nervous due to throwing their support behind Eric Holder, Harold Koh and I'm sure Sonya Sotomayer here shortly,,,Hard to believe a man that says he supports the 2nd amendment and then turns around and supports 3 of the biggest gun haters in the US,Warner had a pretty good gun vote record as governor but I think Webb is just downright sneaky, If he hadn;t run the underhanded camapign he did by bringing race issues, real or otherwise into it.W e would have George Allen as Senator, So I for one am not giving either one of them any points as of yet,, THe vote on the Interstate Carry looks a lot like it was staged and after the Dems were sure they could beat it ,It cleared the way for Senators in gun states to vote yes and still look good to the constituents and the gun groups,,,,

"those who believe any relaxation of gun laws will benefit criminal and violent activity"

How can anyone actually believe criminals care about any kind of laws, much less gun laws. Saw Bloomberg (on a Glen Beck clip) crowing about how the defeat of the Thune ammendement would keep criminals from being able to legally carry guns in our parks, theatres, etc. They break laws, commiting crimes when they do, does he really believe that any kind of CC law, whether it allows or bans, will be observed by criminals? Or maybe he considers everyone who has legally obtained a CHP/CHL and a firearm to be a criminal since, according to him, criminals cannot carry concealed weapons because the ammendment was defeated.

Hell .according to the Governor of New Jersey (Corzine) we the honest law abiding gun owners are criminals too. That relaxation will cause us all to mysteriously go bug fu&% in the streets maiming and killing in a wanton lust for blood, Bullshit!! It would do him well to take a long walk off a short pier . He's pretty much not gonna have a job if all goes right this election.
We knew the anti gunners would gloat like they just won Publishers Clearinghouse,,and twist the thing around every which way,,Drop over to the Brady Campaign some time if you want to see some real propoganda, Once the Dems lose that majority I will have a bit more confidence in votes coming out of Congress,, We all know that reelection is their prime goal. Webb just needs a job and Warner wants to be the next Kennedy.

I tried looking at the Brady website. I had trouble reading anything there though, for some odd reason I kept having to throw up everytime I started reading.

It really doesn't bother me that the Thune ammendment didn't pass. I was afraid that it would backfire on us if it did pass. I believe most states would have let it be but I'm afraid some would have dropped their CCW permits just so they wouldn't have to participate. It only applied IF a state would issue a CHL/CHP, if they didn't issue them then ours would be no good in those states. IL and WI would not have been required to allow CCW.

Oh, I don't think they believe they are right. They know they are spewing out BS, they admit that they use confusion about guns to their advantage. They just don't like guns and don't want anyone else to have one. They want to have control and have their way, but you can't have your way.

I'm glad too that it didnt pass. Glad to see our senators supported it but this one I'd rather see the states handle. The less the feds are involved in 2A issues IMO the better.

Besides with reciprocity we can already carry in several other states.

Now the states need to ween themselves from the federal teat, In cases like welfare states like CA ,NJ,etc: I realize that;s gonna be tough... The further away a state can get from all the handouts the better off it will be, All those goodies come with a catch,,, Do as we say or we will penalize your citizens,,,,, IMHO= cut us off and then go away,,, Leave the states to their own business and stay out of them,

I finally got a different message from Warner. Not an automatic response this time. I think someone else also said they got the same one. I do contact him - frequently - on his web site and all I ever get are canned automatic responses. BS.

I've recently sent 2 or 3 from GOA and several from others like VCDL. This tells me that they are at least awake and pay some attention to what we send. Now if we could only influence them to vote for us before we vote against them.
