Graham-Cornyn bill

Postby student » Fri, 17 Jan 2014 16:43:56

There was a short blurb on the local news about a bill by Lindsay Gram and some Corynyn guy. It was presented as not allowing the involuntarily committed and "not guilty by reason of insanity" as buying guns. I thought this was already the case? I'm very concerned about rights being taking away for anyone who has seen a counselor, takes an antidepressant, etc.

But AFAIK what they were talking about is already the law. VA is sending in a lot of these records since the VA Tech incident. Why is this proposed bill needed and how is it different then the current law?

John Cornyn is a senator from Texas that is up for election this year. There isn't much about the bill because it hasn't been filed yet, but a lot of the hub bub is coming from the guy who's trying to oust Cornyn in the primary.

The "Graham-Cornyn Mental Health and Criminal Justice Reform Act" would have the same effect of President Obama's Executive Order we wrote about yesterday, which expands the NICS to include Americans who have either been treated or visited a mental health professional. In its current form, we understand it does not distinguish if the veteran or civilian was deemed a danger to them self or to the public, just would be denied their Second Amendment right for visiting a mental health professional. When the actual bill is filed, we will report again as to its affects, however we do have the outline described by Graham and Cornyn.

Definitely something to keep an eye on.
