GOP attacks Perriello on gun control

Virginia Republicans launched a pair of attack ads Wednesday questioning whether Reps. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, and Rick Boucher, D-9th District, joined with other congressional Democrats who applauded Mexican President Felipe Calderon last week for urging an assault weapons ban.
The problem, the Los Angeles Times pointed out Thursday, was neither Perriello nor Boucher attended Calderon’s speech.
“Voters in the 5th and 9th Districts need to know if Democrat Reps. Rick Boucher and Tom Perriello were among the hundreds of Democrats who leaped to their feet to applaud gun control while a leader from a foreign nation scolded the American people for upholding the rights secured to us by our Constitution,” Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins said in a statement.
The video tells viewers to call Perriello, who is a member of the Congressional Sportsman Caucus and has co-sponsored several pro-gun bills, and “ask him if he stood up for Felipe Calderon… or if he stands up for the Second Amendment.” The ad also lists a phone number for Perriello’s Charlottesville office.
Perriello’s communications director, Jessica Barba, said in an e-mail that Perriello did not attend the speech. She also included a March 2009 letter to President Barack Obama, which Perriello signed with several other representatives, urging the president to dismiss Attorney General Eric Holder’s proposal to reinstate the assault weapons ban.
“Assault weapons,” however, actually refer to guns commonly used for hunting.
“(Perriello) is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and has consistently opposed reinstatement of the so-called assault weapons ban, among other gun control efforts,” Barba said. “His record in support of the Second Amendment speaks for itself. This is just another petty political attack that is not based in reality.”
Garren Shipley, RPV director of communications, said in an e-mail statement that pro-gun Democrats like Perriello should have spoken out against Calderon’s speech. He said the ads would stay online until Perriello gives his opinion on Calderon’s call to ban sporting guns.
“I find it hard to believe Rep. Perriello is really arguing that since he wasn’t in the room at the time, he shouldn’t have to stand up for his constituents’ Second Amendment rights,” Shipley said. “It’s easy to be pro-gun when all you have to do is sign a letter. It’s another thing entirely to stand up for the Second Amendment when Speaker Pelosi hasn’t given you a permission slip to oppose her.”
