April 27, 2010
Dear Mr. Waltman:
Thank you for contacting my office to express your opinion regarding the Second Amendment and protecting the right to bear arms.
The Second Amendment states in pertinent part that ".the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." As a gun owner and sportsman, I believe that this right is important in ensuring individual freedom. Moreover, I take seriously my role as a United States Senator in protecting that constitutional right. I will work to ensure that that right is not unconstitutionally infringed upon.
As you may know, numerous proposals that address the purchase of firearms are pending before the U.S. Senate. While appropriate laws and procedures should be kept in place to keep guns from the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, I believe that protecting law-abiding citizens' right to bear arms is fundamental in ensuring individual freedom. I also believe strongly in preserving the privacy rights enjoyed by U.S. citizens. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to these ends.
As the U.S. Senate debates matters pertaining to the Second Amendment, please be assured that your views will be very helpful to me and my staff. I hope that you will continue to share your thoughts with us in the years ahead.
I would also invite you to visit my website at http://www.webb.senate.gov for regular updates about my activities and positions on issues that are important to our nation.
Thank you again for contacting my office.
Sincerely,
Jim Webb
United States Senator
