HR 822 response from Sen. Warner

Postby Mindflayer » Thu, 03 Nov 2011 11:55:40

I emailed Virginia Senator Mark Warner to ask his stance on HR 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act. The response is below (my name redacted).

Dear Mr. Mindflayer,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your thoughts on the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 (H.R. 822).

I realize that there are very strong opinions on both sides of the debate around Second Amendment rights. I support public policies that ensure the responsible and appropriate use of guns, as well as efforts to reduce gun-related crimes through increased enforcement and background checks. I supported full funding of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), the only national database that flags individuals who are precluded under current law from purchasing or possessing firearms. I do not, however, support laws or regulations that infringe on the Second Amendment Constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.

In the aftermath of the tragedy in Tucson, Arizona and in light of the Virginia Tech shootings, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure firearms do not get into the wrong hands. In the United States Senate, legislation on gun control generally falls under the jurisdiction of the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which I am not a member. However, I will keep your views in mind should any legislation on this matter come before the full Senate in the future.

Again, thank you for contacting me. For further information or to sign up for my newsletter please visit my website at http://warner.senate.gov.

Sincerely,
MARK R. WARNER
United States Senator

"In the aftermath of the tragedy in Tucson, Arizona and in light of the Virginia Tech shootings, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure firearms do not get into the wrong hands."

Can't say the foregoing language reassured me as to Mr. Warner's position. It would seem to indicate he might fall into line with the notion that we should all suffer a diminution of our constitutional rights to prevent a few crazies from having access to guns. All of us on this forum know that the government might as well try to keep lightning from stiking hickory stumps. Some randomness, some of which will have tragic results, is inevitable. And the idea that the federal government should be in the business of deciding who are the "wrong people" scares the bejesus out of me. And his letter is also disturbing primarily for what he DID NOT say. Yet another indication that Sen. Warner is suffering from kool-aid poisoning.
"The Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference."

I don't think it's a good idea to put that online. WHO KNOWS who's checking? I love big-caliber and longe-range rifles and 1911 pistols, and I've got a few.

Warner will do as his party bosses tell him. Anyone expecting otherwise hasn't been paying attention.

He voted for the original reciprocity bill that went through the senate a couple of years ago. So did Jim Webb. That failed to pass by two votes. Guess which neighboring state's senators voted no?

Allow me to translate this for you:

"I will vote how I damned well please, and I'm not going to tell you what that vote will be. I'll think about you when I cast my vote - "Pfft!""
