New (old) double shotgun

Postby JonDann » Sat, 15 May 2010 18:08:55

I was just given an old (looks like it) double muzzleloading shotgun. Marks on barrel are: "<AMR> (C-20)114XX", "15.4 P1 700 KGS" and "MADE IN SPAIN". 28 in. barrels, small brass box inlet on right side of stock (for caps?), and double triggers.

Locks are a bit rusty inside, barrels look to be in good shape, stock cut down crudely, but it is a muzzleloading black powder shotgun. Should be fun to shoot.

Can anyone help me with the pedigree of this gun? I think it may have been made by Armas ARAL.

By the markings you described, I don't think it is that old. Likely made in the past few decades. Also, 20ga made for modern pressures. That's what I'd guess, but I don't have the gun in front of me. Google "Spanish proof marks" and see what you can find. If you determine the gun not to be valuable, and it is pretty roughed up, it would may be a good one to cut down to a "howda" pistol. (muzzleloading arms are not subject to NFA regulations on barrel length)

Here is a bad photo of the shotgun after refinishing the stock, cleaning the barrel, and cleaning the locks to make them work. I've only fired a couple of caps to make sure everything worked and was clear. Pretty little brass patch box (wad box?) set into the stock looks out of place on this gun, as does the checkering (which may have been added by a previous owner.

This is not that old, these were inexpensive shotguns made for the South American trade some of these were imported in the 1960's & 70's should be safe to shoot as
Spain has a proof house system. the little brass "patch box" may be better suited to hold percussion caps..... hope this helps.
