The COLT has a forged frame and the least amount of MIM parts. Kimber uses MIM parts for everything in the FCG, as does Springfield Armory, Remington and S&W.
Ruger, Remington, S&W and SIG all have cast frames.
It's not that the others are bad. They are all good guns - but the COLT has the best materials and probally the best workmanship out of all of them. Your spending the same $$$ IMO you should buy the best you can get.
The new Gold Cup Trophy's are nice guns for the range. They are all steel and have BIG adjustable sights (which snag on everything) and kinda heavy to be carrying around for self defense... althou they do make a nice BBQ gun in the correct holster.
In that price range COLT has a number of other options if you want a carry gun. Take a look at:
O1880XSE COLT Lightweight Govt. 5" w/Novak sights and an alum frame.
O4860XSE COLT Lightweight Commander. 4 /14" w/Novak sights and alum frame.
O8011XSE COLT Combat Elite. 5" w/Novak sights and steel frame.
I own a whole bunch of COLT 1911's but these are my Gold Cups.
National Match -

Elite .40

I also have the new Combat Elite.

I think if you give COLT a fair comparison, you'll buy one.
