Re: First HandgunI think Clint does a superb job with this presentation. It's the best presentation I've ever seen on pistol malfunctions. I find two interesting things regarding the double-feed portions. First, Clint asks rhetorically, why lock the slide back before removing the magazine. This is a really good question. Most instructors (all, other than Clint that I can recall) will tell you to lock the slide before removing the magazine when performing this clearing procedure. I favor Clint's approach as it eliminates a step. Secondly, when clearing the double feed on the 1911, note that Clint actually racks the slide five times rather than the usual three after removing the magazine. As best I can tell, the round that was in the chamber does not get ejected until Clint's fourth rack. In this type of malfunction when a cartridge remains seated in chamber, the extractor must jump the cartridge's rim as the slide goes forward into battery if it is going to extract the cartridge. Some pistol's extractors have a more difficult time doing this than others. How well or poorly your carry gun does this might be something worth knowing.
Competition is one of the great levelers of ego.
