I am in the market for something else in 9mm. I saw a posting for a used Baretta 92FS. Have done some internet searches on this and those that have been issued this as a military side arm seem to really like it. Anyone have any thoughts, comments, rants about this particular firearm?

A friend of mine who is in the Special Forces or some other three letter agency program swears by his. All he had to say was that take the stock 92F and re-barrel it with a competition barrel in it.

He said after you've done this hands down one of the best shooting handguns on the market.

I've been passively looking for one to see for myself and actually looked at a couple at DeGoff's when I was up that way, but they were pricey. The one you're looking at which I think I saw as well from VGT is a good deal if you compare it to the prices at DeGoff's.

While I am partial to my PT1911, I have a Baretta 92FS and have never had any problems. Solid, reliable accurate, as well a little cheaper to shoot than the 45. Many ways to customize and the Hoag rap around grips really make it feel good to the hand. I worked at the Baretta corp in Accokeek Maryland years ago and I do know they were sticklers for tolerance.

Can anyone give me any clues as to what a Beretta Proshop would be? Nothing listed on the Beretta web site.

I must be blind as I don't see any mention of it. Even did a search and it came up with nothing. Both you and Dustin found it but I can not. Sounds from teh description Dustin posted that its just upgraded parts, not an upgraded model like the Kimber Custom Shop

You may have to call beretta directly as I know they have done special order customs. Gun shops as well may be able to order them for you.

I've got a Beretta 92FS and love it. Its a great pistol, reliable, accurate, safe, and easy to carry. It pretty much eats whatever I feed it and I've never had a FTF or FTE. The ONLY thing I dont like about is it comes with a plastic guide rod. Those can easily be replaced for about $15. Other than that its pretty much my EDC except for when I get dressed up. Then I carry a Colt XSE Commander.

A co-worker has a 92 FS and likes it. My father-in-law has a 96 which is the .40 S&W version which I have shot. Handles well, and even in .40 not too much to handle, due in part to the weight of the thing.

If you are considering this pistol for concealed carry, please note that this is a large-framed pistol. The co-worker bought it for concealed carry, and never carried it. Too large, too heavy for all day (for him...your mileage may vary).

One other note that I don't care for on these models is the safety. It is also a de-cocker, which means your first shot is almost always going to be a DA shot. Cocking by hand is not an easy thing to do. The safety is also on the slide vs. the frame, which makes it rather high. You CANNOT carry this pistol "cocked and locked" like a 1911.

I hate to be the stick in the mud, but the Beretta 92/96 series is one gun that never grew on me. Too clunky and bulky, bad trigger.

For a full sized, alloy-framed DA/SA 9 mm lifesaving device, I'd go Sig P226 every day of the week. It's probably no coincidence that US military personnel I know, who have the choice (SOF), opt for a pistol other than the M9. USCG voted with their feet, as they aren't bound to DOD. Can't think of a major LE agency that issues the Beretta. But if you like it and it works for you, disregard!

To be fair, being a military issue gun, it has to perform consistently (note I did not say well) in awful conditions with less than optimum treatment. The M9 does that rather well by all accounts if the articles I have read regarding the test trials have any validity at all (American Rifleman).

My gripe would be having to "fix" all those issues after having paid a premium for the thing. I'd prefer a Glock or M&P which are both solid platforms that go bang every time. Like most things of Italian design, they look good, but are abysmally non-ergonomic and less than thoughtful with regard to function. Ever drive a Fiat or Alfa Romeo?

?!?!?!? I love mine and carry it with me everywhere I go except when I dress up. Then I carry a Colt. I've found the Beretta 92 to be a great shooter, great action, easy to carry. I love the way it fits my hand and it you know a trick or two you can easily solve the trigger on this gun and most others. Easiest take down IMO and easy to clean. I highly recommend these for anyone except someone with smaller hands.

Let me start by saying, I started with a M1911 that was made in 1918, that was in 1982. So that pistol is the standard that all other pistols are compared to. The Beretta feels just as big, not quite as heavy when empty, but when loaded very close to the same. I have very big hands and the Beretta's grip is actually wider than the old Colt's. As for the trigger, the double action pull on the first round feels very heavy and long. The following rounds are fired single action and it feels much better. The safety is positioned high on the slide and swings down and back, which feels funny to somebody used to the Colt's. The safety is also a decocker. As I was originally trained, the M1911 was carried safety off, with an empty chamber. You drew and racked it as you raised the pistol. With the M9 Beretta, sometimes it was on safe, with an empty chamber and other times it was on safe with one in the chamber. Personally I find drawing a Beretta and trying to take it off safe to be something that takes a lot of practice to be proficient at it, I'd rather do the draw and rack actually.

The military also uses the M11, a more compact pistol which is actually a Sig Sauer P228, It has a 13 round instead of a 15 round magazine (a 15 round from the P226 will fit, but protrudes from the grip slightly). It does not have a positive safety per se, but it does have a decocker which makes the trigger pull for the first shot heavier and longer (double action), and then lighter for follow on shots. With the Sig it is just draw and fire, or draw, rack and fire. No worrying about the safety. In theory, the Beretta should be more accurate than the Sig because of the longer distance between the front and rear sights, but in practice there is virtually no difference. Competitively, Army shooters are using both pistols. I don't know what the proper military designation for the Sig Sauer P226s that the Navy SEALs carry is, but that is another option that is used by the military.

On the personal level I own a Colt, several Sigs and a Beretta. I won't tell you that the Beretta is a piece of garbage, it is a nice, good shooting pistol, that is every bit as big as a M1911. It takes more practice to be proficient with it than the other two pistols because of the safety. The Sig on the other hand is more compact, shoots just as good, feels good in my hands and I don't have to worry about the safety. It is an easier pistol to get comfortable with. As for the Colt, it isn't the one made in 1918. It is just like the one that set the bar but not as sloppy loose. My suggestion is try it, see if you like it...

I find flicking the safety up pretty natural on the draw. The first shot is a little heavy but not that bad if you do a little trick to take up the creep....

Personally I love the M9. I've spent 12 years with it and found it very natural. Before shooting the M9 the only pistols I ever shot was a .22LR revolver and a Buckmark. With just a little time with the M9 I felt like I could hit whatever I wanted. We used to run ranges where we put a random M9 on each firing lane's pedistal. One time I stood on the left most lane and hit all ten lanes' 37 meter target with 10 rounds. I had never shot that particular pistol before and just had a 10 round mag to familiarize myself with. It's an incredible pistol.

On the flip side of everyone's safety coin, I'm just the opposite. To me, there is nothing more natural than the M9 safety. Then again, it's all that I've known. When I went pistol shopping and tried several on, the 1911 style safeties seemed very odd. I'm sure that with a little time I'll get used to it though.

Why all those misplaced rounds?

It is a good gun, but so are any of the military designs. Depends on what you like and what you want to use it for. I wouldn't consider one for concealed carry, too big. If you care about history and what the military thinks, look here: http://www.defensereview.com/the-true-s ... m9-pistol/
