I picked up a Colt 1991A1 on the used market for about $450, good gun no frills. I wound up putting about $600 into it to turn it into a custom piece.

A buddy of mine said, "I saw this 1911 at the gun show I want to buy as my first!" I said, "Okay, what features does it have that you like?" He says, "Uh .. what do you mean?" Take your buddy to a gun show and have him finger f* every 1911 he can find and show him what he is paying for.

I checked out the 1911 selection at VA Arms last weekend while completing my Glock 9mm collection. I know my friend really likes the less-flashy service look and feel. I think the Springfield 1911A1 they had will really fit the bill, and it was listed at around $850 so it's a little under what he was planning on paying. I think we're going to take a trip out there next week to look some more.

Friend ended up picking a Colt Government model. Nice and exactly what he wanted.

This is going to be his first handgun (he's got a number of long-guns) and he doesn't plan on carrying it, just taking it to the range and using it as a home-defense/nightstand gun.

Based on his preferences I am thinking the S&W 1911 series may be his best bet. What do you guys think?

I have a Kimber custom II 5" barrel. Very dependable, very accurate right out of the box.I was going to change the sights to adjustable, but after shooting it there was no reason. It retails for about 800.00. The only thing I did to it was to add a wilson combat flared mag well. :pistol:

I got a good deal on a Springfield Range Officer today at the gun show. Over $100 cheaper than anywhere locally. I am VERY happy with it. Took it out and ran about 200 rounds through it. Tack driver is all I can say.

Going back tomorrow where I will fine-tune the sights. Very pleased.

Congratulations! Nothing shoots like a M1911A1.
