This is getting ridiculous.

Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionThe people who come up with this must be standing in big room and all wearing I'm with stupid shirts!
I shal now go out to the country and with some gasoline soaked hay to make a video and prove to them that bullets can't do that! ![]() “I'd much rather go to my grave never needing to use my gun, than go there wishing I had"
Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionSomebody please remind this idiot to suck air in and blow it out so he can breathe. I wouldn't want his self suffocation to be blamed on gun enthusiasts. Give me a damn break.

Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionI don't know I wouldn't haul off with that can of gas too quickly, it isn't exactly far fetched. I've seen many large range fires kicked off by ammunition, maybe Utah just has that many people blasting away in the woods or wherever they're going to shoot. You figure all it takes is some dope with a few "cool tracer rounds" and the chances of starting a brush fire go up pretty quickly.
On a different note, imagine if guns were linked to the dinosaurs extinction? How cool would that look to unearthen a Tyrannosaur skeleton holding a pistol sideways like a wannabe gangster?
Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionNo I'd say about 85% of them are caused by natural occurances such as lightning, then another 14% are caused by campfires, then a staggering 1 % are caused by other means (cigarettes, psychos, and mabey in some extremely rare instance a bullet though more than likely muzzle flash).
But tell me this if bullets are so hot as to cause ignition then why do paper targets lack burn marks? It's becasue once the bullet leaves the gun it starts to cool as air cannot cause enough friction. Now mabey if it strikes the right type of rock that is surrounded by the right type of kindling, it may spark and cause a fire but the odds of that are long. “I'd much rather go to my grave never needing to use my gun, than go there wishing I had"
Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionScientists say that dinosaurs farted themselves into extinction. So dont fart when pulling the trigger and you should be good.

Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionUnless I missed something in chemistry class, how can lead and copper cause a spark? Steel core round...possible...tracer round probable, but still unlikely. As to the second posters post....nah....... it was Cheney, not Bush!!!!!
We continue to be exasperated by the view, apparently gaining momentum in certain circles, that armed robbery is okay as long as nobody gets hurt! The proper solution to armed robbery is a dead robber, on the scene.

Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionLead and copper cause a spark? Like you, I'm not sure, I'm Biology geek (sharks are cool!) rather than a Chemistry geek. When I was in the Army I was stationed at Fort Hood, TX. We used to set the ranges on fire all the time. If I had to hedge a bet I would say that tracers were probably the main culprit followed by steel. At night especially with the steel tank rounds, you could see them spark in the thermal sights. To the point where there was a permanent detail from whichever platoon wasn't shooting, their entire job for the day was to go snuff out brush fires. It was a real pain in the dick at night because the residual heat would play games with the thermals. They would spread quick as hell with a good just a little wind.
Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinctionLooking around, thr big fire mentioned was started by machine gun fire on a national guard camp. FWIW

Re: What next? Gun owners at fault for dinosaurs extinction
Ricocheting bullets????? REALLY? Someone's been watching way too many 1950's westerns. Even with mil.surp. steel cored rounds, what are the odds of hitting a rock hard enough (like flint) and close enough to dry grass to start a fire? Mythbusters couldn't get a car (with plenty of gasoline) to explode (or catch fire) without using tracer bullets and backing off far enough for the tracer chemicals to get going real good. A comment posted on another forum:
Some people are saying hot brass is the culprit. Personally, I don't think that hot brass ejected from a semi-auto is anywhere near 451°F. Assuming, of course, that the temperature to start a fire in tinder-dry grass is close to the temperature at which paper spontaneously combusts. Human-caused wildfires increase in Calif.

That doesn't mean that it can't be done, on purpose, that is. With DragonBreath AlanM
