Virginia State Police Network Down for 5 Hours

Postby allingeneral » Fri, 20 Jan 2012 14:50:44

A network outage crippled Virginia State Police for five hours Thursday, leaving the force unable to perform background checks, run fingerprints or register sex offenders.

State police reported the problem to the Virginia Information Technologies Agency around 1:30 p.m., spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. The network remained down until around 6:30 p.m., when most features were restored. In the meantime, troopers didn't know if the person they pulled over was wanted by police, if the car was stolen or if the person was a known criminal. It also meant those who went to purchase firearms were turned away because dealers couldn't perform the necessary background checks.

Not the first time that's happened, either... Wonder if the mark is gonna be on Northrop Grumman or if it belongs somewhere else....

Yeppers. Tried to make a purchase on Thursday and was told it was down. Still no gun today due to them being backed up.

I doubt anybody will be 'punished' as the lack of accountability seems to be a growing trend in both state and local government. It took me 4 months to find out (part of) the reason my checks were constantly being delayed. Even after getting the "PIN" to make things easier I found that is an outright falsehood as the VA SP _STILL_ have to run THEIR checks..... Worse yet the software to do the background check doesn't even have a field for it!

Wonder if they think that with a Gun Freindly Republican House and Senate they can wangle some more bucks for the budget??? True about how noone ever gets their ass chewed for the States screw ups.. Just another reason I am against Unions for Fed,State and Local types... I avoid anything State related as often as possible.. If I can do it online all the better,,,

Oh, you got a UPIN? Sorry, that's just for NICS states. Here in Virginia you have to get a UFIN! To do what the UPIN does, only with the state system.

Seriously, I hope enough people will wise up so we can ditch this useless, wasteful, duplicative state system.

Having just relocated back to VA from Arizona, I have to ask, what does the state system do that the Fed system does not do? Or is it all about a few jobs and taxpayer money?

Arizona scrapped their own state system years ago, felt it was not worth the money.

Under the law the system has two main roles. It enforces the one handgun per month law, and it also accesses certain state databases having to do with mental health that (I think) are not connected to NICS.

Unoffically, the police like having the power and don't want to give it up.

It also looks into "other" states data bases besides the mental health ones that the fed would normally ignore.. I agree that LE and the politicians that oppose this don;t want to concede the power and the income,

Well here in Va we happen to arrest people that attempt to purchase firearms and are not able to. So for the comments about why not enforce the gun laws on the books instead of making more stupid gun laws well Va is so far ahead of all other states and the feds its scary. I still dont understand why you would want bigger fed gov by giving them full access to gun rights instead of leaving your gun rights with the state.

I agree the role belongs to the States and the Feds should stay out of the States business.
We should get rid of the Fed database and let each State regulate it as they see fit. :coffee:

Don't get me wrong, I also think power should rest with states, not the Fed. That's why AZ has been able to enact so many pro-gun laws over the last few years.
