Short-term storage in Arlington so I can be gun free in DC?

Postby earth » Fri, 23 Mar 2012 17:10:43

Howdy people,
I'll be traveling to your next door neighbor (DC) on a many-state traveling vacation shortly. The bad news is my wife already booked a special, non-refundable hotel in the District for 3 nights. I've read enough to know not to chance bringing my firearm across the beltway even if it's unloaded, locked, stowed apart from ammo in the bowels of my vehicle. 3 nights in DC on our multi-state vacation would arguably be considered a "destination" and since we're doing more than passing thru, Peaceable Journey is null and void. So this brings me to my question... are there any short-term (3-day) storage lockers or options in the Arlington, VA area into which I can check my firearm while we're in DC? Long shot, I know.

THX!

What direction are you coming in from, which way are you leaving town?
I'm wondering if you could leave it at one of the VA gun shops. With the ammo, of course. Each round is a felony in DC.

Or, maybe cut a deal with a pawn shop.

A storage locker would be $65 (for a month) and I'm not at all sure I'd like to leave a gun/ammo in one!

As a last resort I can hold on to it for you in Alexandria if you'd like. I'm about 15 minutes outside of DC and I work from home so I'll probably be here just about whenever you want to drop it off or pick it up. Toss a pm my way if you end up needing that. I'll xerox my id for ya and let you drop it off at my house.

Now THAT'S what I call a good gesture Joe! Thanks very much. It's amazing what law abiding citizens need to do to be compliant.

PM coming your way.

Regards,
Ed

He's trying not to break the law, though, which would be happening unless you have a FFL.

My advice to the OP, find a gunshop in NOVA and drop the gun off for cleaning. You can pick it up when they're done in a few days.

It would be an issue (if I am following correctly) because the OP is a presumably a resident of PA, Good Samaritan is a resident of VA. Doesn't matter if the OP mailed the gun to GS or brings it there and hands it to him, that counts as an import across a state line either way, and that is prohibited by Federal Law unless the recipient is a FFL holder. I am assuming Diomed thinks the OP is not a VA resident, because of the comment that they're coming from the Pittsburgh, PA area

Now if the OP is not a RESIDENT of PA but is a resident of VA who is merely traveling from PA, then I would think that would NOT count as an import across state lines and it would be legal... quite trusting, but legal...

I figured the OP was not a current resident of Virginia. If he is, then he can leave a gun with a non-licensee. Otherwise, the feds say it's got to go to a licensee or not change possession.
