Really? Woman shoots herself in the leg with her handbag

Postby TacticalMom » Fri, 15 Jun 2012 12:35:11

While I was out running errands with the kids. I started laughing as a radio personality started talking about this woman who shot herself in the leg. I should not laugh but oh my goodness, sometimes I can't do anything else.

Good Lord and those people who are commenting such idiotic things as see we should outlaw guns, guns and bullets kill people, etc... I can imagine them waggling and waving their arms in the air like a muppet oh my purses are killing people now.

Incidentally I was OC'ing with my glock on my side in a secure retention holster. I would never have thought to keep lose cartridges in a purse.

The handbag was aiming for her head, but what kind of accuracy do you expect from a handbag?

Call me crazy but I'm not buying it. There a good bit of pressure needed to set of a primer. I can't think of a better explanation but this one just doesn't seem right.

The comments on the page are too funny. People saying that a bullet without a handgun is still a handgun! First off--cartridge! Second that is just crazy.

Particularly funny was one where a woman fund a bullet in a house she was renovating. She was so freaked out by it that she took it to the local pd--really? That is just crazy.

from link:

CORRECTION: The original source for this story notes that it was the bullet's casing that put a hole in the purse and caused a minor leg wound.

The casing injured her? Was it an old one and the neck wore through the bags material and cut her leg?

Very strange.

So, this reminded of something really odd. The only firearm my dad ever owned was a 16 ga shotgun (I have it now). After he passed away I was helping my mom clean out the house so she cold move closer to us. We had lived in that house since 1969, they had the kitchen cabinet refinished in the late 90's. That involved removing the doors and facings. So, there we were, in 2002, cleaning out the spices when my mom comes across a .45 caliber round. It was standing on end, tucked into a corner.

Anyway - back to your regular programming.

An unchambered centerfire round can go off if the the primer is hit hard enough, a .22 rimfire can go off even easier, think about all the hard objects in a woman's pocketbook, If she drops it on the ground, car seat, shopping cart, etc.. It pinches the rim hard enough and the round goes off. It won't actually shoot like a chambered round. the case will probably peel back and spread like a flower, creating lower speed brass shrapnel as the round goes off like popcorn. The actual bullet would probably not even make it out of the pocket book because of its mass.

While cleaning out my late grandmothers house I found an assortment of 410, 32 S&W, and .22 ammo. Needless to say I was really bummed when I didn't find any firearms!

It has to be a fair bit of rapid concentrated pressure. Pretty crazy chances I think the 9 volt battery angle is a little more plausible. Definitively would love to see it tested.

The only batteries I've ever seen in a woman's purse were "D-cells", and they were in a "container".

D cell? Musta been a big container. ;)
I had a SCAR 17 and 16. I also had a bunch of Glocks and a couple H&K pistols. Oh and a DDM4, but I sold everything when our government told me these dangerous tools can actually hurt someone. Apparently they grow legs and go on killing sprees.

It takes less pressure than you think. The difference between the series 80 (Colt model 1991s)and earlier Colt 1911s was the addition of a firing pin block. If you were to drop an older 1911 from several feet with a round in the chamber, hammer lowered (not exactly a comfortable thing to do) or cocked and safety on, the inertia from the firing pin going forward would be enough to set the round off. That could occur provided the pistol landed with the barrel virtually perpendicular to the ground. There were only a few instances of this occurring in the 60+ years it served as the US Military's primary pistol. Circumstances had to be almost perfect for it to happen, just like this accident.

The article doesn't give the details of what type of round it was. Just thrown loose into a pocket book, a .22 round's rim is pretty exposed. If a woman just dropped her several pound bag on the ground it could easily get caught between the various items in the bag and go off. If I had to speculate I would guess it was more likely a .22 than a center-fire round. The 9V battery could be another way, but I don't know of to many women who would carry a random 9V around. Getting mashed between the eyeliner, three shades of lipstick, sun-glass case, car keys and cellphone would be more believable in my eyes.

Guys, I believe it was an empty case that cut her. See bottom of article. :)

Here is the original article from the Sun Gazette: http://www.sungazette.com/page/content.detail/id/579432/Police%E2%80%94Bullet-explodes-in-woman-s-handbag-while-she-shops-at-home-improvement-store.html?nav=5052
"Something must of hit the primer of one of the bullets," Bentley said. "The bullet stayed in the purse, but its casing put a hole in the purse and caused a minor leg wound," he added.

It also says it occurred around 2 PM, the woman's son encouraged her to seek treatment which she did about three hours later.
