Questions on VA laws regarding guns/ammo in the home

Postby Geezer » Mon, 16 Jan 2012 20:48:30

As a current citizen of the PRM (People's Republic of Massachusetts), Even tho I have a LTC (CHP) I am currently living under some of the most draconian and idiotic gun laws in the country. It could be worse...CA, MD, NYC, etc however I am going to be moving to VA in a couple of years and am currently applying for a non-res VA permit so I can carry there while visiting relatives in the meantime. We have a lot of laws pertaining to the safe keeping of firearms and ammo in the home and I am wondering what that situation is in VA. For example:
1. Firearms in the home, if not being carried, must either be locked in a secure container/safe or have trigger locks on them. It is illegal to have a firearm "at the ready" while sleeping unless it is in a bedside safe or has a trigger lock thus making it not really "at the ready".
2. Ammo in the home must be locked in a secure container and is limited to a prescribed amount.
3. Unless we have a special permit from the local fire department we are limited to 1000 primers and 8 pounds of smokeless powder which also must be locked up separately.

I've read all the info on the VSP website and NRA-ILA and not seen any reference to laws regarding weapons/ammo etc. in the home. Is there anything I should be aware of in this regard?

The short answer is that here in Virginia we have no such restrictions on firearm storage, ammunition or reloading supplies being stored in your home.

However, if you are renting, your landlord may have restrictions on ammunition and reloading materials that can be stored on their property.

Also, no trigger locks or special gun safe is required for your home defense weapon.

1 & 2 have no equivalent law in VA.
3 most counties/cities adopt the NFPA (national fire protection association) recommendations.
10,000 primers
25 lbs powder, 50 if you have a powder magazine (wood box with 1" walls.)

Is there anything I should be aware of in this regard?

You might need plastic surgery to correct the uncontrollable smiling due to your rights not being trampled upon.

Can't a landlord/property owner go as far as to say no firearms - not just ammo/reloading materials?

I'll be staying in a relative's home when I come down and will eventually purchase a home. It's a real PITA here always wondering if you are in violation of some damn law, rule, or regulation.

Yes. As long as they don't violate the fair housing act almost anything goes.

The landlord can say what they want, you don't have to rent from them, though. If I saw that in a rental agreement, I'd move on to the next one.

That's what we're allowed with the permit.
