Off topic rant and warning - Allstate Car Insurance for VA

Postby kevmullins » Sun, 05 Feb 2012 10:26:34

I've had Allstate insurance on my vechcles and home for 19 years now. Never have turned in any type of claim what-so-ever. Got my renewal in the mail yesterday....up $720 from last year! Of course I called the customer service. Their excuse? I paraphrase...."We have deemed the state of Virginia to be a high collision state. We asked for and received permission for a 31% increase in vehicle insurance" I politely told her exactly where she could put her insurance!

So...if you've got Allstate...look out.

*Climbing down off box* Thank you for allowing me to vent and warn

Sounds familiar. I too was a long time Allstate customer but they just kept getting higher and higher. Went with Rockingham Mutual, which is a Virginia company based in Harrisonburg. They were cheaper than anyone and are a solid company.

Very good topic, and rant!

Auto Insurance companies have this expectation of loyalty, I have NO idea where they get that from! If you increase your rates to a ridiculous amount, there is ALWAYS someone in the wings ready to replace you!

Don't drop LEVELS of coverage to STAY with a HIGHER PRICED company! I know people who've spoken about doing that, and you definitely DO NOT want to drop levels of coverage in this SUE happy day, and time!!

The average new car price is over $30K, I usually try to stay a lil' above those limits.

Been doing some online window shopping. Looks like I can actually increase my coverage in several areas and still come in much cheaper. Really burns my butt....

If you feel like staying with Allstate and avoid switching companies, take those quotes back to them and say they can either match it or you are leaving. Most of the time they will keep you around. If not you have a couple companies that you can go to.

Commono misconception you can't take quotes to a company and match it, it's impossible. 90% of companies are raising premiums mostly on homeowners side to compensate for catastrophe losses this year and last. Allstate is having to raise rates due to tremendous investment losses over the past 3 years.which I agree should not be passed on to consumers. On the other hand stay away from centrally located state companies, one natural disaster and your royally as crewed.

I and on loyalty to auto insurance companies, after the first 3-4 yrs companies typically increase profit on a single policy 65-75% it's literally no cost to them except the paper. Unless you have a high claim

Strange cause my rates have been dropping for the last few years and I recently read an article that the number of accidents was down and that many companies were dropping their rates.

I pay very little for excellent coverage for auto and home from geico. My rates go down a few bucks every year.

And my homeowners covers me if I shoot an intruder.
So rattle my bones all over the stones, I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns. Oh, see how words as old as sin, fit me like a glove.

I'm here and here I'll stay.

I was in the same boat this year, I had been with Nationwide for 10 years and my premiums have went up the past 2 renewals without any claims or other issues for them to be raised. I called them and they said that it was just rate increases. Soooo, needless to say I had to drop them. If you happen to be military or related to someone who is, I would suggest USAA for insurance. They beat every other quote by a lot!

I've got Allstate and am going to call them now about my rates. I think my renewal is due at the end of the month.

Thanks for the information!

A little exposition on the Hillbilly theory and practice of hoss-tradin' here......................

If your current insurer is or is trying to overcharge you and you have found a new insurer that has offered to insure you for less, WHY would you reward your current insurer’s avarice by allowing him to meet the rates of the insurer who offered a lower rate? When I find myself in that situation (for anything, - not just insurance), I NEVER reveal the lower price to the incumbent supplier. I learned at my pappy's knee that your obligation is to the guy that offered you a better deal; NOT to the guy that could have and didn't. There is a very pragmatic reason for this rule of business ethics: if word gets out among suppliers that you'll just let the incumbent match the price, other suppliers may well decide not to offer you any more low prices just to be used as a lever.

I don't think it's a good idea to put that online. WHO KNOWS who's checking? I love big-caliber and longe-range rifles and 1911 pistols, and I've got a few.

I can always use another 1911.

I'd be interested in hearing what your agent says. Mine only told me that he just found out about the rate increase himself and really can't do anything about it. Not that I expected him to say anything else though....
