Liberty U. says 64 apply to bring guns on campus

Postby OakRidgeStars » Fri, 30 Dec 2011 15:34:05

From the Virginian-Pilot

LYNCHBURG - Liberty University officials say dozens of students and faculty have applied to carry guns on campus since the school changed its weapons policy in November.

University officials say they have received 64 applications — 26 from students and 28 from faculty. The school will not say how many have been approved.

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. tells the News & Advance of Lynchburg (http://bit.ly/vMgTPZ) the new policy has garnered widespread support on campus.

The policy replaced a total ban on firearms on campus. Now, students with concealed-weapons permits can apply for permission from campus police to carry a gun on outdoor grounds or in a locked car. But they're prohibited from bringing guns into campus buildings.

Faculty and staff can apply for permission to carry weapons inside buildings.

And they have the chutzpah to call themselves "Liberty" university?

Yes, and the Antis are all up in arms about it on Facebook. The scary thing is that a Leesburg COUNCILMAN posted something along the lines of "teenagers with raging hormones" having guns on campus. I pointed out that in order to apply you had to have your VA Concealed Carry Permit - at age 21 or older.

Travis, back when it was an outright ban, I would have agreed with you. Still do to a certain extent, but it is progress and maybe when they see that the blood isn't flowing down the halls the program might expand. This is certainly more than GMU or Virginia Tech are offering currently. We just need to keep up our efforts.

To those who have kids who are 21 and over who are still in College/University, I would recommend looking into a Public Utah Campus. By State Law everyone who has a Concealed Permit can carry their sidearm to CLASS!!!! (Imagine the horror) But when was the last time you heard on the news one of the Permit holders shooting up the campus? If you do send you kid(s) there though, make sure to send a copy of the paid bills to the Colleges and Universities here in Virginia and point out to them the money their policy is costing them. Maybe if this happens enough, we might start to see a change. Also keep pushing on your state representatives to make publicly funded Colleges conform to state laws, so that our kids can carry their self defense tools with them on campus.

We probably won't see a major change, but maybe if we can keep up these smaller changes a little at a time we can actually turn things around.

Awesome good to hear people are taking advantage of the program! Let's hope it leads to further expansion!

It's just a name.

From some of their other policies, "liberty" seems to be what happens when you leave campus.
