VA Gun Laws - don't complain

Postby KaosDad » Sun, 15 Jan 2012 16:31:58

Due to a turn of events I may be moving to North Carolina in the very near future. In preparation I have been researching NC gun laws and signed up on the NC Gun Owner's Forum (Nice group of folks). However, Holy Moses - the gun laws just to our south are confusing at best and Draconian at worst!

- No carry in restaurants or bars.
- No carry at any place that charges admission.
- You must register your firearm if you live in Duke County.
- You need to purchase a "Pistol Purchase Permit" for $5, unless you have a concealed permit (which costs $90 plus take courses, and, no, you cannot simply show you have a permit from another state and transfer it over).
- In Cary you can't carry on public property. In Chapel Hill you can't OC.

And so on. So, my fellow Virginians, we must continue to be the bastion of our 2A rights.

Unless something's changed, you must also inform LEO if you're carrying when approached.

Used to live in Cary and it was a real PITA to carry a gun there, Obviously Research Triangle has had its effect on the area.Damn Yuppies!!! .Probably worse now....... Used to be relatively wide open there before it had its growth spurt to the friggin mess it is now.

None of those restrictions are going to be found unconstitutional, so your only hope is to work on the legislature. Start up the NCCDL (or see if it already exists) and start lobbying.

Their equivalent to the CDL is GRNC; Grass Roots North Carolina. What will be interesting is if this job comes through the CEO is VERY concerned about personal and personnel safety and is retired USMC. So, I imagine he'll be pro-2A. I may turn into that "crazy guy who moved to The Triangle with guns and stuff."

It will be interesting.

I lived in North Carolina and remember those laws well. The purchase permit had to be issued at the courthouse (a pain) and was good for 30 days and could only be used once. It took at least 3 days to get it.

It's pretty good here, but for "bastion" status I'd have to say Vermont and Arizona.

I'll take Vermont carry over a silencer anyday.

I'm trying to recall, but I seem to have a memory that VA CHP was good in NC? No?

Yes, VA and NC have reciprocity - however the laws are still much different down there.

I guess I need to brush up on that. I go to Raliegh quite frequently to visit my daughter. I knew NC had reciprocity, but never thought about dissimilar carry restrictions. I never actually carry; just keep a couple in the console. Last summer I lost an alternator in Winston-Salem about 6pm on a Friday evening and the bowtie monstrosity died in the road on I-40. I called 911, and when the young cop showed up, I explained I couldn't leave my vehicle because I had my 2 carry guns in the console and a new purchase (1911) in the back floorboard and needed to get it fixed where I could stand guard (not to mention a dog). He helped me find a place, admired my guns, and went on about his business. I must not have done anything illegal. Sometimes there's no substitute for blind luck.

I don't think it's a good idea to put that online. WHO KNOWS who's checking? I love big-caliber and longe-range rifles and 1911 pistols, and I've got a few.

I can always use another 1911.

If anybody’s interested, here is a little something on the NC gun laws. Needed to do it for me, anyway.

From all I can find out every time the Gov declared a state of Emergency in NC the transport and carrying of firearms was exempt from the order. Carrying firearms under the Emergency was never stopped. The law is still there though and they can do that but didn't in the recent past.

Well, I was a little bit shocked to find you had to get a PERMIT to buy a pistol in NC. It makes me wonder, if I should ever decide to pull up stakes and retire to NC where the majority of my grandkids are, how I would be obliged to domesticate my fairly extensive collection of handguns in North Carolina. One could certainly take the position that he acquired them legally in Viorginia and that NC was obligated under the Full Faith and Credit clause of the US Constitution to recognize his legal possession. But then again, if you had a house fire, and the police/fire officials found several dozens of handguns in your house and asked to see your permits to have purchased them, you might find yourself in an awkward position until you could get face-to-face with a judge. Also, they may take the position that possession is just like concealed carry: You have to comply with the laws of the state where you are present at the time. Hope I don't get too senile to remember this. 60th birthday this past Friday. Time to start worrying about this stuff, according to SWMBO.
