This week, (12/15/11), New Jersey officials apprehended a trespassing, vagrant, black male, gave him drugs, and relocated him to a new home.
He had been found sleeping in the basement of a Hopatcong, N.J. residence.

I am originally from northwestern NJ, not too far from Lake Hopatcong. In fact, when I was a kid, we had a boat we kept on Lake Hopatcong and spent a lot of time out on the lake. My father still lives up there.

Anyhow, northern NJ has a big problem with the black bear population. The population density has been increasing like mad for decades, and formerly very rural areas have been developed and built up. So they're running out of habitat. And NJ is a pretty liberal state, so a lot of people don't like it when hunters hunt them. There have been protests and bans on hunting them, so the ability to hunt them has been greatly restricted.

In the past few years, there have been increasing run-ins with people and black bears. People have had their little dogs attacked and killed, their trash cans raided, bird feeders destroyed, etc.

It's the same old story - as people increasingly invade the wildlife's habitat, the wildlife increasingly do what wildlife does, and the wildlife ends up losing.
