Good evening to all.
I have a question on concealed carrying in the Virginia General Assembly buildings. I have a Commonwealth issued CHP but I'm curious as to the procedure used when actually entering the building. I'm traveling in a few weeks to Richmond for an advocacy/lobbying event and many of the people I will be traveling with ( my superiors included) are ardently anti-second amendment rights. None of them know I conceal carry on a daily basis and I'd like some guidance on how to proceed. Normally I dont carry into a government building since they normally have an army of security; but, after we are done we are proceeding to an area outside the General assembly buildings that is hardly safe. My question is: Do Capitol Police expect me to display my sidearm in front of others? I know to expect to furnish my CHP and valid ID. My concern is my superiors and co-workers reaction should I be asked to produce my weapon. I know many of you are veterans of advocating/lobbying in the Virginia General Assembly for second amendment rights. Any wisdom you can grant me is much appreciated.
Be well and carry proud,
CalebDor

There is typically no need for officers to "inspect" your weapon, just hand them your D/L and CHP and you should be good to go.
don't you have to open-carry, with chp, in the gab? and, i thought i read that the senate barred handguns in their gallery by their own rules. please correct me if i misstated. considering the op is traveling with folks who 'are ardently anti-second amendment rights', that may indicate the desire to cc on the trip and in the gab, if i interpret correctly...

No, you can either OC or CC but a CHP is required regardless. In other words, you should carry concealed since as a CHP holder you can do so. The following was taken from last year's VCDL Lobby Day document. Reminder: If you happen to be armed, when you approach the metal detector, confidently walk up to the checkpoint,if you are carrying a briefcase, purse, etc., place it on the conveyor belt, get your permit and photo ID out as you walk through the metal detector. The metal detector will buzz. Show the officer on the other side of the metal detector your permit and photo ID, saying something like “Hi, I’m carrying today, here is my permit and ID.” You will probably be “wanded” – not sure why. You should be through quickly.
Permit holders without bags or purses may enter through the 9th street exit where the Capitol Police have established a special check point for permit holders. Also, remember that if you have a permit from another state that is valid in VA, that should suffice as well. Finally, we have seen in the past that even though you have a gun, they may tell you to take your knife or pepper spray back to your car, so just leave those items in the car unless you are feeling lucky.

Thank you OakridgeStars and MK4. I'll be sure I enter through the CHP checkpoint on ninth street to avoid any "Imperial entanglements" as it were. I appreciate the advice.
Carry well and carry proud!

It seems that your travel mates will be learning that you are armed, unless you manage to sneak away from the group to enter by yourself.
Have you given any thought to how you will handle that?

Hail to you SHMIV! Many of the the people I will be traveling with use wheelchairs and/or power chairs. If I had to produce my personal sidearm I'd probably cause a big scare to the folks I'm lobbying with. If all I have to do is show my permit none of them would be the wiser that their caregiver is also a guardian. Carry well and carry proud SHMIV, Caleb

You MAY carry concealed. There is no ulterior motivation to carry concealed in the GAB than there is at any other time.
