First Savage Bolt Rifle !

Postby Snakester » Wed, 29 Nov 2017 18:32:59

I bought my first Savage Rifle yesterday.....Went to several gun shops with a buddy of mine , he ended up buying another Henry . I was thinking .....Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor or in .308. I ended up buying a Savage Axis II 6.5 Creedmoor with Digital Camo Stock and Bushnell Scope and ACCU-Trigger and a $100 rebate....Final cost about $360.00.....Hope it was a good deal and hope it shoots as good as the reviews say it is !!!

Good price! Of course we'll need a range report!

Great price, and I enjoy my 22 and 308 greatly. The only upgrades I currently have planned for the 308 is to pickup a Boyds stock, and a Savage Varmint or heavy take off barrel. The only reason for the latter is I like to shoot 5 shot ragged hole groups instead of 3 shots. Don't get me wrong, the factory barrel o it is the sporter, and it will put three in a nice ragged little dime size hole at 100 all day long with 175gr, or 180 gr rounds. It really does not like the light weight stuff at all, but I'm not surprised, my Contender doesn't like lite bullets in most of the calibers it shoot either.
Enjoy that new Savage, I have see many of my Remington only pals jaws drop when they shot mine, and saw the size of the groups out to 200 and even 300 yards for an out of the box, nothing done to it rifle with the factory tupperware stock.

The Savage Rifle is OK , nothing really special. It will probably be more enjoyable when I replace the scope. I feel like the scope is mounted too low. My hand hits the scope when I open the bolt. The Bushnell Scope is junk. I could not get any adjustment at all. When I replace the scope I am going to install a little taller mount to help with the bolt clearance .

Huh... is the scope not high enough or is it too far back?

If anything it could stand to be moved to the rear a 1/2" . That would help with the bolt. I'm going to work on it this afternoon and bore sight it first , then try to get it right !

I spent about 3 hrs. today working on the New Savage. I changed the mounts and moved the scope to the rear just a little . Now there's enough clearance so my hand does not hit the scope when cycling the bolt. We also pulled the scope apart and reassembled . For some reason the scope works fine and adjust the way it should. We shot it first at 30 yds. and got it to shoot several tight groups with only 2 adjustments. We then moved to 100 yds. and it was shooting about 3" high . One slight adjustment and we were shooting consistently tight groups. Much better than yesterday's shooting and now I am pretty pleased with the Savage.

I don't clean the barrel unless I get dirt in it. The copper fouling actually helps make the rifle more accurate because the material left behind makes up for imperfections in the barrel. Its almost like a self-leveling surface.

I figured that out about 5 years ago. Just about 3 years ago I hit 20,000 rounds through my M4 clone. After that I stopped counting. Its a mil-spec piston system with a chromoly lined barrel. SIG advertised it as a 1.5 MOA rifle, max. It still shoots 1.5 MOA today.
