Feral cats

Postby Jim » Thu, 21 Oct 2010 09:14:51

I think there's a couple of feral or stray cats around my place. Early this morning, about 1 AM, my dogs went to General Quarters. I got up, got the hand held spot light and my Judge and went to the back door. Nothing.
I'm gonna set a live trap and see what happens. Could be a 'coon, too. There's a small trickler creek at the bottom of the hill and the area is perfect for critters.
Lord, please protect us today from having to use deadly force.

Call it good training! We had a raccoon or something knock into or crawl space door and set of our alarm once. It was before I got into to firearms so it wasn't any training.
I have about 30-40 around our neighborhood. They roam over into our yard and drive my dog crazy. We called the county and such but no one is interested in taking them, even with we trap them ourselves. So we trapped and released a few into the wilderness. It made a dent but they stopped following for it.

Oh, listen, I praise my dogs when they go off! I love 'em and pet 'em and give 'em a cookie when they see something and let me know.
'Specially my Jones dog. "Daddy, Daddy, there's a cat in the yard!! Get the pump gun!! He's under the truck!!"
As for trappin' 'em, you know, I discovered the strangest thing. Did you know that a 'coon size live trap will fit right down in a trash can full of water? Ain't that the oddest thing? Last time I did that, I went inside to get a sandwich and forgot all about. Then, when I remembered I put it in there, I rushed back outside. Alas, I was too late.Dang!

I heard spreading pepper around the grass may work. But I've never tried it myself. And every time you mow the lawn, it scatters the stuff away.

You need to mix up a batch of OakRidgeStars' famous "Critter-B-Gone" to keep the dogs and cats away.

Here's what you'll need:
2 cloves of garlic
2 small onions
1 jalapeno pepper
1 tbsp. of Tabasco sauce
1 tbsp. of chili powder
1 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid
1 qt. of warm water

Chop the garlic, onions and japapeno pepper finely and combine them with the rest of the ingredients. Let the mixture sit and marinate for 24 hours, strain it through cheesecloth or old pantyhose, then sprinkle the resulting liquid on any areas where the critters are a problem. You will need to reapply every few weeks, or after a hard rain.

As with any household concoction of this type, be careful not get it on your skin or, God forbid, your eyes.

If I stole all that stuff outa' my wife's pantry, she's liable to put a load of small shot in me. I think I'll just keep the small shot and put it in the cat. Besides, that lasts a lot longer than any concoction.

Cats whether feral or just plain old outside cats kill songbirds and I have seen them kill full grown rabbits. So Jim you seem to know how to handle the problem and all I can add is keep up the good work.
I'll won't even tell the kittens on the skeet thrower story. Okay that was just a joke.

Jay:

One of my cats would eat that stuff right up. We adopted a cat that hung out by our house, knocked on our back door, and generally wanted to be inside - and then found out he liked to chew on cables. I tried everything, and the first mentioned cat would follow me around the house licking the cables clean, with the second in tow chewing on them. Amusing to watch, annoying as hell.

If you can catch 'em live and get them to animal control, I prefer that method. I'm an animal lover. If you do have to shoot them, make it quick. It makes my heart ache to think about it.

[OTOH, I say if you see feral humans, pop 'em good.]

I tried with animal control one time for stray dog's with no collars on our property. They asked me if I had a gun and I said yes. That was the last time I spoke with them. Don't get me wrong I am an animal lover but I will still put a .22 Magnum in their head if they trespass on my property.

Especially since they clearly ignored the "Posted, No Trespassing" signs to get in there! All they have to do is read and heed...what's so hard about that?

The problem with unneutered feral cats is that they breed so fast, and a small population will decimate the bird, squirrel, and rabbit population..

I cannot advise the course of action that is advisable in this actionable course.

If the cats are "noxious" or "destructive", there may be a local ordinance that allows you to shoot 'em. Otherwise, you may run afoul of the Virginia Animal Cruelty statute, which makes it a class one misdemeanor (12 mos. in jail + $2,500 fine) to "kill any animal". What I can't figure out is, how come exterminators don't go to jail?
Nothing I say as "user" should be taken as either advertising for attorney services or legal advice. Legal questions should be presented to a competent attorney licensed to practice in the relevant state.

I'm in such a remote location, nobody is gonna come up here to ask questions about gun shots. I just came back in from walking my hound and I heard my neighbor, about a half mile away, lining up his muzzle loader for season. It's rare to get through a day out here without hearing at least one shot.
