Re: Detroit arming themselves
That's one officer for 233.3 citizens. The national average, according to Project America, is 1 officer per 434.78 (or 2.3 per 1000). Cite: http://www.project.org/info.php?recordID=33 By the way, I just did a Google search; I've never heard of Project America before about 5 minutes ago, but there it is, anyway. Re: Detroit arming themselves
Why even apply for a permit when the entire judicial system is obviously so inept and corrupt? Still though, I like her attitude! So rattle my bones all over the stones, I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns. Oh, see how words as old as sin, fit me like a glove.

Re: Detroit arming themselves
It is a lot of police for a city not to mention due to the fact the police are "unable to cope" with crime you have close to 800 federal agents also in the city and surrounding counties investigating more serious crimes. Doubt the city police are overwhelmed but rather disorganzed at every level. That's detroit for ya!!!
Re: Detroit arming themselvesIt's been my experience in nearly 30 years of "government" that incompetence is usually the answer to the "why" questions.

Re: Detroit arming themselvesA bit off topic but when big business runs out of MI (5th most unfriendly state to do business in) everyone on a local level scratches thier head why unemployment is so high and the crime rate skyrockets.
Re: Detroit arming themselves
I was neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you. Your comment made me wonder how Detroit matched up with the national average, so I looked it up. When I found the answer, I figured that I'd share it with the rest of the class. My findings seemed to support your statement, for what it's worth. Now, that said, the ratio of police officer to civilian doesn't amount to a hill of beans, all by itself. There are other variables to consider. In a city of 700,000 people, how many of those 700,000 are inclined to commit criminal acts. How many of those criminal acts will be violent? What is the moral mindset of the average officer? The list of variables is long. "God Almighty created simplicity. Complexity, inspired by the Great Deceiver, tends to be the province of men. " S. H. M., IV
Re: Detroit arming themselvesGood data you pulled up. Crimal behavior is also also a factor. The dc police depatment has 3800 officers with a population 600,000k residents and countless other law enforcement agencies and it is a mess.
Re: Detroit arming themselvesLet me relate this "police per citizen" issue back to my home town in SW VA:
As stated, 3,000 cops for 700,000 citizens, at 1 cop per 233.3 citizens certainly is over the national average of 1 cop per 434.78 citizens. So Detroit has more cops and less law and order. Big surprise? Not really. My home town, about 15-20 years ago before the Walmart came to town, had something like 4,400 inhabitants and 7 cops, or about 1 cop per 628.6 citizens. It was a typical small town; the cops we had had very little to do and everybody liked it that way. Then came Walmart (I don't really know if there is a causative link; except that they were the source of a lot of tax revenues that SOMEBODY had to spend) and also a police chief who chased grants and local funding to build up his kingdom. And also about that time, we got a mayor who had spent his entire working life as a teacher and school administrator, and who therefore saw growth in government as progress. About 4-6 years ago, we had a population of 3,900 and 27 cops; which comes out to only 144.44 citizens per cop. Citizens were and still are disgruntled because they feel they are over-policed. Customers are telling downtown merchants they won't shop downtown for fear of traffic stops and parking tickets. And figures published by the State of Virginia show the City's expenditure for police is 150% of the average for cities in this state. We have more crime. What changed? I can think of three things: Liquor by the drink, the people and the cops. I don't think liquor by the drink made any difference except that it gave all those cops something to do: sit outside the town's 2 places that serve booze and wait for folks to leave. It all comes down to people and the standards they keep. "The Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference."

Re: Detroit arming themselvesIt's interesting that you bring up small towns. I lived in a town that consisted of about 1,000 people. There was one officer for the whole town.
People in that town would leave for a week for a vacation every year, and not only leave the doors unlocked, but the front door wide open. Every now and then, you'd see that ol' Ronnie had a car pulled over, but I doubt that he ever wrote a traffic ticket. I think that the only reason that he wasn't bored to tears in that town was because my best friend would lead him on the occasional chase with a dirt bike. And that normally ended with ol' Ronnie giving up the chase, and heading over to my buddy's to wait for him to come home. Yeah, Dormin, you're right. That is certainly one of those variables; people and the standards they keep. I suppose that it's worth mentioning that every citizen in that town had access to a loaded gun, or ten, at any given point in time. That certainly helps to keep each other in check. Re: Detroit arming themselves
Wait, are you telling me that there were a lot of guns in that town but not bodies laying all over the ground from the rampant gun violence? <GASP!> ![]()

Amazing, ain't it? That should boggle the brain cell of the Brady Bunch. "God Almighty created simplicity. Complexity, inspired by the Great Deceiver, tends to be the province of men. " S. H. M., IV
Re: Detroit arming themselvestry living with one cop for every 156 citizens. Oh, and the land area of the town was 0.61 square miles.
None of that is an exaggeration btw, thats all accurate according to city data. And they were hiring more cops. Police states are no fun. I lived in one for the worst 18 months of my life. So rattle my bones all over the stones, I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns. Oh, see how words as old as sin, fit me like a glove.
I'm here and here I'll stay.
Re: Detroit arming themselvesYou neglected to mention the number of residents in that 0.61 square mile. I guess that it may not be relevant; just trying to see the whole picture.
I've never actually experienced anything close to a police state, but I'm pretty certain that I don't want to, either. "God Almighty created simplicity. Complexity, inspired by the Great Deceiver, tends to be the province of men. " S. H. M., IV
Re: Detroit arming themselvesObama would rather have us like England with state sponsored welfare thugs burning down entire city blocks and holding an entire people hostage.

Re: Detroit arming themselves
9600-ish. Still a very high ratio of cops to people. And they were corrupt as all hell. So rattle my bones all over the stones, I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns. Oh, see how words as old as sin, fit me like a glove.
