Re: Cruise Ship Captains?I can't believe that the captain of such a large ship acted the way this guy did. Not only how he reacted to the accident, but how he even got himself into the situation to begin with! From what I've seen on the news, he went through that area to "Show off" to the people on the island.

Re: Cruise Ship Captains? When planning a cruise...I always avoid Carnival and its affiliates. Having a friend who is a cruise travel agent and who has been on over forty cruises has convined me of this. Just sayin
Re: Cruise Ship Captains? The captain literally drove the ship onto the rocks. Look to the right of the tug and you'll see one of the rocks that sliced the hull open like it was paper.

Re: Cruise Ship Captains? In his defense he apparently wasn't just showing off. He was asked to navigate closer to shore so that the head waiter's family could get a better view of the ship. When hit the rocks he realized the ship was going to sink so he steered it closer to shore to increase peoples chance of survival.
Now on the other side of things as a captain if he didn't know that dept of the water he shouldn't have gone into it and he definitively shouldn't have tried to leave right after before insuring other's safety. “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”
-Winston Churchill
Re: Cruise Ship Captains?@ Jake
Not so much... he could bought them a really nice pair of binocs or even a spotting scope for less than that! Holy crap, was the entire family near sighted?! Nah - not justified in deviating from his prescribed course. Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...
Re: Cruise Ship Captains? The current plight of the Costa Concordia reminds me of a comment made by Churchill.
After his retirement he was cruising the Mediterranean on an Italian cruise liner and some Italian journalists asked why an ex British Prime Minister should chose an Italian ship. "There are three things I like about being on an Italian cruise ship" said Churchill. "First their cuisine is unsurpassed. Second their service is superb. And then, in time of emergency, there is none of this nonsense about women and children first". Competition is one of the great levelers of ego.
