Careful where you point that radar gun!!

Now this is a funny article---

"Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road.

One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill, and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to an R A F Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:

"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto, your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.

Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.

Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status, and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed.

Good Day..."

I once had a flight examiner that had been instructing at an aviation university in Daytona Beach, FL for about 20 years. Back in the 90s, they had a twin engine aircraft that had weather radar. The school had/has a pretty strict policy on flying when there are thunderstorms in the area, so the only time the radar got used was a quick check of whether or not it would paint ground clutter (tilt the antenna down and see that the returns from the ground are shown on the radar screen).

One day, someone did this while at relatively low level over I-95. Then they noticed a string of brake lights from the cars that were traveling their same direction. They tilted it up, and the brake lights went away. Back down; brake lights came back. They told all their friends what they had discovered. Pretty soon, it was a regular occurrence for students and their instructors to "assist" the FHP in speed control.

Do not know if this is true or not, but I once read that one session of "Red Flag" training (think "Top Gun") back in the 70's featured a National Guard unit that racked up a huge amount of victories during their time there, even (or especially) against regular Air Force units. Further investigation supposedly revealed that the unit in question all had bootlegged commercial-off-the-shelf automotive radar detectors mounted on their glareshields, so they were getting advance warning of the opposing force that no one else was getting.

Like I said, do not know if that is true or not, or if those radars even work in the same bands/frequencies???
