Are there any requirements for purchasing ammunition beside ID or drivers license?

18 years old for rifle/shotgun ammo, 21 for pistol ammo.

You shouldn't even need your DL/ID unless there is a question about your age. There is some grey area on what exactly constitutes "pistol" ammo as there obviously is a lot of crossover; or more precisely, it's an arbitrary distinction that the anti-gunners got into the law. E.g. if you have a .357Mag lever action rifle, can you purchase .357Mag ammo at 18 even though most .357Mags are handguns? It's federal law, so play it safe if you're not yet 21 and always buy "rifle" ammo.
