I just completed the NRA's Personal Protection Inside the Home (PPIH) course and I was very impressed. Some of the information was basic firearms handling and rules, that I was aware of, and that was a nice refresher. We also went over cover and concealment, levels of threat awareness, your "safe room", escape plans, etc...
At the range, we went through several drills including point shooting, threat recognition due to distance and shooting targets at various heights with different round counts. Not the standard double tap, but target 1 is 1 round, target 2 is 3 rounds, target 2 is 2 rounds, etc...shooting from cover and concealment as well as weak hand shooting. We also shot while moving, which was a first for me. I went through 200 rounds pretty quickly.
I highly recommend that everyone should take an advanced training course. Yes, they can be expensive, but the knowledge gained outweighs the cost. You don't necessarily have to go to an NRA course, it can be any reputable course.
