How long does it take for the state to process your CHP and is there anyway to look up the status of it? I sent my wife's and my paperwork in about 2 weeks ago and I'm impatiently waiting for it.

Up to 45 days. After that point, the clerk must issue your application back to you as your temp permit until it's either approved or denied. Not sure about checking status - guess it depends what locality.

as meak99 stated, statute gives the circuit court 45 calendar (not business) days to approve and issue or deny your chp application. after that they must certify your application as a temporary chp for up to 90 days while they continue to process.

if you tell us which jurisdiction you're in, i'm sure others could give you an idea on how long it might take. as example, i'm in greene county and mine took a bit over 3 weeks. i've read that some of the northern circuits take every bit of the whole 45 days. more, if folks let them get away with it. if you get any flack from the clerk after 45 days, the office of the clerk of the va supreme court oversees the circuit clerks' offices, and reports are that folks have gotten positive results by escalating the issue politely.

depending on your circuit, you may be able to look up your application status. go here: http://wasdmz2.courts.state.va.us/CJISWeb/circuit.html and select your circuit court. select 'civil' and search on your name or case number, which may be listed on your payment receipt.

Im in Spotsylvania Co. so does anyone one have any experience with how long they take to get everything processed?

45 days is the max I believe all counties are different as far as how long it might take, my county Prince William took 10 days from the day I dropped it at the clerks to the day it came in the mail I was very happy with that.

I got mine in Henrico County back when it was 90 days, and they took every single one of those days - and then three more.

What I've heard is that these days Henrico routinely takes the full 45 - and more. Of course, it's a very populous county and the Circuit Court has a busy docket, so I'm sure issuing us paranoid gun nuts our CHPs are not top priority.

Well the wait is over. My CHP finally came today. Now I am all legal.

That's not encouraging. I put my application in 2 weeks ago. Pleasure to deal with and all that, but 45 days is way too long in my opinion. The county is always wanting money for better systems that never seem to improve efficiency. How much more work does a CHP investigation take as opposed to the normal background check for a firearms purchase? Seems to me they could combine those systems to some degree.

Just about a year ago, I got my permit in 20 days from Henrico.

Hello all, I'm moving to Va, and I know my Indiana LTCH is no good in Va, how friendly is Richmond to OC'ing? I have a DD214, from the Air Force, but it's over 20 years old does it still count?....I've had the Indiana LTCH for over 6 years, but there is no shooting requirement to get the license. Also, does Virginia still have the stupid 1 gun a month, or 30 day waiting period for handguns? Does that apply to private sales/trades?

20 year old DD214 should be good to go. Mine is from 1994 and it worked for me.
A bill to eliminate the 1 gun a month is currently being passed around. It does not affect private sales, also, CHP holders are exempt.

Man, Prince William is definitely not getting mine back to me as quickly as 10 days. It's been 18, and I'm still listed as "Active" on the site. Bummer.

Tazewell County took right at 3 weeks for mine. Clerk told me the judge had been slammed with case load and got a little backloggted. She said the Judge is normally a little quicker than that.

Henrico County 27 days. I assume that includes weekends. I am pleased.

Arlington takes all 45
