I love machineguns, but...

Postby Diomed » Thu, 30 Jun 2011 02:26:06

Sometimes they are just a pain in the ass.

I went to get the Lewis gun put back together today (it's been down since last year), and while putting it back together, I knocked the feed arm on the floor. The feed pawl spring went off into the wild gray yonder, and I sure don't have a spare. So probably not going to be shooting it next week.

I brought along the 1919, because it's got a history of being an absolute beast to get the backplate off of. After having to take it apart the hard way (the driving spring guide pin wouldn't lock into the bolt. If you've been inside of a 1919, you know that spring is serious business, and not to be messed with), oh look, the belt feed arm is being held in by ... nothing. The spring, washer, wire, all just gone. It's ghetto-engineered back together but I don't know if it's operational.

And these are just small issues compared to what I usually do to these guns. I love them, but like a retard with a fuzzy animal, I love them to death. Sigh.

ATF just said I could take home an even more weird and unusual gun - a Hotchkiss. I'm sure the ensuing disaster will be epic!

Remember, when things go flying look in the deepest, darkest, hardest to get to, spot in the room.

On the other hand, if you keep your garage workshop cleaner than most doctor's offices, miracles happen. Spring found!

Let this be a lesson to us all, to clean the damn garage occasionally.
