Yep. Economies of scale works.

Edit: every now and then a place like cheaper than dirt will have very cheap "surplus" ammo that may or may not work well but is priced cheaper than wal-mart.

Dick's right now has Winchester buy one get one half off. Unfortunately this brings the price down to a few bucks more than WalMart.

green top is good on ammo. .223 is a good deal but the ammo is not good for reloading unless its real remingtion or win. brass.

Don't know where you live, but R & D in Rocky Mount usually has Walmart beat.

Almost always Walmart. Which sucks cuz they support illegals and all their stuff is Chinese made, except the ammo.

Of course they only carry common stuff. Exotic ammo is rarely in stock. In fact my two local stores didnt even bother with .380 until I bugged them about it. Then when they did get it they only carried that cheap Tula crap. The stuff jams up my guns.

If you are looking for a bargain you can hit up the Nations Gun Show in Chantilly and see whats what. You may get a deal, especially on bulk military surplus like 5.56 and 7.63.

The only time I buy ammo in a regular store is if I happen to see a real deal or I need it today...otherwise I do all my business on the internets where the real deals are and you can find anything you want...

Yeah I've seen plenty of places that have free shipping on a thousand rounds.
I already put 850 through my Sig P238 and 150 through my LCP.

I try to avoid buying anything at WM. They are famous for negotiating deals with suppliers to make special runs of products just for themselves (sometimes, though, along with other discount places; e.g., the Michelin tires you can't get anywhere except WM, Costco, & BJS). The problem with that is that their "special runs" are for the specific purpose of cutting manufacturing costs. So mechanical items will have plastic gears instead of metal, for example. No telling what they could do to ammo, but I don't trust them.

Okay, love my CZ RAMI 9m BD, don't like buying the range ammo. I picked up some Wal-Mart ammo (RWS) but was told I could not use it at Sharpshooters due to the possibility igniting fires issue, and possibly destructive to their bullet stop system (?). While irritating, that's their call and I suppose they want me to use some higher-quality ammo (such as what they sell). So, I need to find a cheaper source of acceptable ammo for use at indoor ranges. What brands and "model" numbers should I look for to use at sharpshooters? And then, what are some cheap option to buy in NoVA, and/or online?

Thanks!

Actually, the RWS ammo is pretty good stuff; it shoots relatively clean and is accurate. The problem Sharpshooters and some other ranges have with it is that the bullets contain steel. The RWS ammo has a soft steel jacket beneath the copper outside of the bullet. Sharpshooters worries about any steel in bullets causing sparking and possibly igniting the rubber chunks it uses for their backstops. Even outdoor ranges can ban bullets containing steel. This happened recently at Black Creek in Mechanicsville. They have an all steel target competition once a month and don't want their targets damaged and they worry about an increased bullet splatter hazard. Most ranges will check for the presence of steel with a magnet.

Black Creek Steel Shooters may NOT use steel core ammo such as S&B, Wolf, and Tula.

Your ammo is subject to random magnet checking.

If you are found to be shooting such ammo, you will be banned from competition at Black Creek Steel and Black Creek IDPA for 1 year.

Safety First!!!!!

Federal, Winchester and Remington FMJ pistol ammo is all steel free.
Competition is one of the "great levelers" of ego.

If that were true, they would probably make everyone buy their range ammo like some ranges do.
