Hazmat shipping fees or not?

Hazmat shipping fees or not?

Postby allingeneral » Mon, 09 Mar 2009 22:25:28

Do any of you buy primers online? Do you get charged a hazmat fee to ship them via UPS Ground? I looked over 49CFR §172.101 which is the Federal Dept of Transportation Hazmat list and I can't make a clear determination. Primers are mentioned, but not primers that are shipped separate from propellant.

So, based on your reloading experiences... have you paid a hazmat charge on a box of pistol primers?

Hazmat fee applies to both primers and powder. I tried to order 6 different types of powder from 3 of the big internet companies and they were all out of stock. Same with a lot of bullets, no one has them. Not only is Obama selling a bunch of guns he is also a good salesman for reloading components.

This fee is a scam. I remember when UPS started it-- $2.00, oh no big deal right? Bull. The story I got was some idiot UPS driver got a case on when he couldn't leave a package because the dealer was closed. He THREW the box, full of primers all the way back into the truck and guess what, it exploded. :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: Besides being plagued by thieves, UPS is full of idiots-- hence the required overnight shipping of firearms. Who pays? We do. :bangin:

My guess is you gonna be waiting for a while. I'd look elsewhere if you really need them.

I've been able to make do with the purchase limits at Greentop's and Woodbrook's this summer tho they both are a little steep. Cabela's was the cheapest... I guess they could be giving them away! - Still wouldn't matter - they don't have any. :bangin:

Unfortunately up here in NOVA there are no primers to be found unless you load shotshells. I'm forced to allow myself to be robbed by folks on gunbroker but its better than going without.

Funny I ordered a few 1000's magtech small pistol from cabelas on Wednesday they shipped on Thursday. Should be in my hands mid-next week.

Things do come into stock but they go out of stock fast

www.wideners.com has LP SR LR in stock now. I've seen they have had the wolf SR primers in stock for a month now.... so it appears that the shortages are beginning to ease but its still not walk into the local store and buy a case of the shelf.

My order from C's was for Winchester LR SR LP SP, 2K Ea... still nothing. Last week Woodbrook had a pile of Winchester and CCI magnums, Greentop's has been mostly CCI and a little Federal LP.
Since I'm new at reloading, I've been trying to hold variables to a minimum... :coffee:

The only time I've ever seen a hazmat fee is on primers and powder. Ammo is considered stable but the shipping container must bear a specific designating label.

About a week ago Cabela's offered to substitute CCI for the Winchesters still backordered since last March...

I said heck yeah! - send them on! In my grubby little paws three days later. this is the 3rd shipment of an 8k order, still waiting for the last 2k. Only one $20 hazmat charge tho, makes you wonder, is this fee really necessary? hmmmm?

hey guys well i can help you all out, yes the fee is no joke, you must pay it. even me as a dealer have to pay it when i buy them and have shipped to me. now $25.00 thats a little high, i am looking into finding some one else to ship for me.

NOW WHO WANTS PRIMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have an order about to be placed for import. We will be importing PRIMERS this time. If you so wish to get in on this pre order we will supply to you. Depending on what it is you would want as for primers we could sell up to 16 million a load. As for price, we can do this for you; small primers are $26.25 a 1000. If you place an order of 20K or more with our order, we will drop that price to $26.00 even. We can get you small hand gun, large hand gun, small hand gun Mag, large hand gun Mag, small rifle, large rifle, small rifle Mag, and large rifle Mag. If you would like them as well please ask for pricing if you are interested to buy in on an order, they are Russian primers. I hear they are better than Winchester. Our order is already accounted for so we will not be able to sell you any primers once our load arrives because they are already sold.

It will be around a 3 week lead time on shipping till it arrives in port Norfolk where we have our main warehouse. Once we submit our request to the factory we will know our fill time which is not very long at all. Then they will provide us our bill, payment will be sent and then move onto shipping.

Also, we can import ammo as well, if you are wanting ammo, we have 102,000,000 rounds available to import as of right now. If interested in that ask as well. 9mm steal case is selling for $14.74 box of 50 we also have available 223, 308, 7.62x39, 30-06

I agree. UPS is full of morons, most of which get their jobs not because of merit, but because someone in the family already works there.

You say these are Russian primers. What Russian Company are you talking about. Is it Wolf Primer's ? For myself I won't order Primers without knowing where they are being made and by whom and I do believe that most serious reloaders are like that or they should be. I do think you would make out better on this sight with cutting a deal to people that buy 5,000 or more not 20,000 I don't know of anyone on this board that is loading for a living.

I just got 5,000 Wolf small pistol primer's shipped into me from Florida at a cost of $178.00

$31.60 per 1,000 X 5 = $158.00
Hazmat Fee of $20.00
Total $178.00

With you I would have saved $26.75 if they are Wolf Primer's

An interesting supposition. UPS has (at least used to have) the most stringent policies about NOT hiring people from the same family, nationwide, that I have ever seen. I fell victim to it myself back in the mid-eighties when I was a driver when I married the daughter of a woman working in the front office of our center. I suppose it could have changed, but I would be shocked if has gotten that bad. Any first-hand experiences to share?
